Slingerland AA Pedal Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hello,

My Slingerland knowledge is lacking. I got this pedal with a vintage MIJ kit recently. It seems that there are several variations of this pedal.

Mine is lust like the one pictured (got the photo off ebay-mine is still in pieces being cleaned). The footboard detaches completely from the body of the pedal, with a "Speed King" style hook, albeit a little larger. Also the open end of the hook faces the footboard, whereas on Speed Kings the open end faces away from the footboard.

The spring is on the inside of the left upright, with the wingnut tightener on top. The bottom of the spring itself is just hooked to a little "knob" that is part of the actual metal frame of the pedal; as such the bottom of the spring doesn't move or swivel.

I can post pictures of mine when I put it back together if that will help. In the photo the main pedal frame is rusted; mine is a light blue.

What "era" is my pedal from? What would be a fair market value?

Thanks,

V

Without consulting my "Slingerland book", I believe the AA pedal's popularity would be from the 50's to mid 60's. Fair market value? Possibly $25 - $50, depending on condition. Honestly, though, I don't really feel it's a pedal for any serious bass drum work these days. Would be best for display with a period correct kit.

Thanks Mark. When I get it cleaned, I'll post some pics and try it out. That footboard might be a little too small for my size 12's!

I do like the fact that the footboard is completely detachable though, just like a Speed King.

Ya know... the more I look at your AA pedal, the more I think it's an Epic pedal with an AA heel plate. I've attached pictures of the AA pedal I remember. I always felt it was the precursor to the Tempo King pedal.

That's just like the AA pedal I had...just traded. It's not the most solid pedal, but it's smooth. I played several gigs with it without any problems...as recently as last Friday night, actually.

I agree, the pedal in the original post looks like an Epic.

Thanks for the info. I think it might be a true AA, because of the placement of the spring. Here are some photos after a good cleaning and new beater. I replaced the beater height adjustment with a Ludwig Mickey Mouse Wing Screw. Also, I replaced the rusted (and partially stripped) wingnut that adjusts the spring tension with a stop nut so it won't come loose. Everything else is original.

I believe the Epic is the model with only one spring, and the AA is the same basic pedal with two springs (one on each side). If you have an AA with one spring it may have replaced the heel pad, or it was during the transition to the two spring model.

I use my Epic and LOVE it. I just recently sold my Tama SpeedCobra to use this pedal exclusively. I've tried every pedal including DW, Axis, Pearl, etc and the SpeedCobra was the best, with this one being as smooth but not quite as fast. But seriously, how fast do you need a single pedal to be, and it looks cool on the '63 Slingy kit. Value is stated above, $25 -$50 and the double spring AA model goes for a few bucks more.

Hi All,

Best I can tell I'm high bidder on this pedal. Need one to complete my Slingy set.

However, if there is a problem or whatever just let me know and I'll step out.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Hi,

I love these old slingerland pedals. Yours has an Epic frame with an AA heel plate. The Epic only has one spring, while the AA's have two springs. I currently use an AA with my slingerland kit and like the feel a lot. I've also owned an Epic that I liked as well. Both are great to complete the classic setups. You've got the best of both worlds with parts from both!

Enjoy it.
