Sky Blue Ludwigs ? Is This A Deal?

Loading...

Hello from Cleveland,

A local had these on Craigslist and I picked them up, in need of a good cleaning. I got a serial number of 3068988 on one of the toms, all the numbers are in the 306XXXX range, my guess 1980's. What do you think the value is here? The bass drum has a repair along the seam and the floor tom does too. Super Classics, 22" bass, 16" floor, 11 & 13"? and so on. I got a few stands and a couple Paiste 404 cymbals in the deal. See pictures below.

Don't know if it is a deal unless you share with us what you paid if you got them for less than 350. it is a real deal.... and it is hard to tell from the pics what kind of condition they are in..

I paid a little more than that ($400). They need cleaned, 6-plys and they're solid in that respect, the two seams that are repaired are my biggest concern, not that that is falling apart, more of how to make it look good.

I saw those too. What a description by the seller. :)

I think the rivet seam repair might be part of the Ludwig fix, because the wrap they used was shrinking. I thought about responding, but I'm working on another kit at the moment.

Keep us updated. I'm interested to see if/how they clean up.

Interestign because I recently had a 18" sbp Ludwig classic floor tom with a riveted wrap. Was of the understanding that the riveting was a short-lived way of wrapping by Ludwig, and was discontinued quickly because it was causing all kinds of issues with wrap staying adhered to shell, rusting rivets, etc. Structurally the drum was fine though. $400 is still a decent deal.

What year(s) did they do the rivet fix? Maybe it was an owner fix and not a Ludwig fix.

The 1982 catalog lists the 22/12/13/16 as the Big Beat and Sky Blue was offered up through 1981.

Based on the serial numbers, I agree early 80's.

I believe mine was an early to mid 1970s wrap and I was told by the seller that it was Ludwig's standard practice to rivet the wrap to the shell? I took him at his word. I have since sold the drum so I don't have the serial number anymore.. The wrap was indeed peeling away from the shell and the rivets were rusty looking but it oculd have been more due to the climate the drum was kept than Ludwig screwing up..

Just to confirm...the riveted wrap is period correct and factory installed. It was a Ludwig "fix" that was not the greatest idea. There are threads on here somewhere describing this in detail.

A quick advance search (Ludwig + rivet + wrap):

"Come quick cuz it will be sold less than a week I have a lot of people waitn on dis post" Cool Dude

It looks like you also got a couple free blankets from the 80's too.

I thought about calling the seller, but I chose to get the 1970 Acrolite posted on CL that day.
