Should I Or Shouldn't I Sacrifice My Extra Avocado Tom For Inlay Strips? VOTE PLEASE!

I love how two posts can be so completely opposite and both are completely emphatic and final with their points. Its great to have so many different vintage drum fans in one spot!

Do not don't do it! Do it not don't...how would you make strips long enough for an inlay? By making a spiral? I think if I was ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE it would come off undamaged, I'd do it.

I wouldn't do it just to make inlay strips. My vote is no.

It would take 3 chunks to make a bass drum hoop, but its totally doable.

From longjohn

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.. they say.. But on the other "hand"... I reckon Chrome inlay in hoops generally matches with any Wrap...Cheers

While I certainly agree that chrome hoops MIGHT look good with any wrap, are you willing to settle for that... or have matching inlays?

I enjoy this thread. Really shows how passionate we are about our drums!

Yeah. I was thinking about that too.

To answer another question above...I think I WOULD actually be happy with chrome inlays. But would I be as happy as I would be with Avocado Strata inlays? I just don't quite think so.

It might be a good idea to go with chrome in the mean time though...until I can decide what to do for sure. I would feel really bad ripping that perfectly good wrap off of the drum...thats for sure. This is why I am asking for opinions. I need help being persuaded.

Okay, it's time for me to chime in...

Adam and I have been discussing this, and I never really gave him my opinion. First off, someone said it isn't a classic shell... Oh, but it is. It's just got granitone sprayed inside it, and not white paint.

What would I do?

Well...

I'd go with all black hoops, or like I did, put the hoop with the Avocado strip on the reso side, and a black hoop on the back.

I would not strip the drum (although, in our PM's I said I'd take a strip if Adam does).

Avocado Strata's are scarce, not rare. You could easily sell that 12 to someone attempting to restore a jazz kit (20, 12, 14) or the missing drum on the five piece (22, 12, 13, 16). I don't remember the model numbers at the moment.

So there's my opinion. And, my opinion and a couple bucks will get you coffee at a Denney's...

Well I did not give a definitive answer before.. whilst I suggested chrome inlay it is indeed my choice of inlay on any drum.. Probably based on the (biased) fact that chrome hoop inlay was used on all wraps by Slingerland for years..

The tom, despite the holes would be useful to somebody with or without the wrap but in the interests of correctness.. I would not strip it, I'd sell as is and let someone else make the decision.

Me, I would not be happy with a patchwork of inlay, nor would I be happy with 1 black and one inlayed hoop..

So my vote would be no don't strip it.. Go with both black hoops or just go Chrome...

Cheers
