Rogers Big R XP8 Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I found a kit locally for sale that I hope to find more info on. I'm getting a great education from members of this forum.

The seller says it's an XP8 kit with Keller maple shells. It's the 4 drums only (12, 13, 16, 22) in black. It does have the memriloc tom mounts and such and the badge is opposite the tom mount. It looks to be clear laquer on the interior of the shells. The BD hoops match the BD in color. The wing screws on the tom mounts have the "R" in a circle (dull finish).

Is there a definitive way to tell if they are indeed XP8 Keller shells? Do I just look at the bearing edge and count plies? What might it be worth if in what is considered good condtion? I will check on getting some pictures but wanted to start here.

There are no reinforcing rings in the eight ply shell. The badges will have Rogers USA, there might be serial numbers, and there might not be serial numbers. There are a very few XP8 drums with 6 digit D series numbers beginning with a 7. I have only seen a very few of these. Mostly you will see D six digit first number 95, 96, possibly even 97, (in use 1979-80, and some later) RD series 96, 97. 98. (1981, 82) No serial number USA badge (1980-81). If a badge does not say Rogers with USA under it, it isn't the real deal. D series six digit 100,000-approx 125000 these drums are 1983-end 84.

The Ploughman, great info, thanks. I have looked at your Big R dating guide and it is very helpful.

The badges do say USA and there are no serial numbers. The BD hoops are missing the inlays and one has a small chip. There are some scuffs on the finish...being ebony or jet black I guess I'd expect some of that The bearing edges are smooth. No shell delamination and the wrap is not peeling. Is this set worth $350 for the 4 drums with the tom mount (no SD)?

Given there are a host of unknowns still, If the edges are good, the wrap is good, hardware is good...... easy

I ended up getting the XP8 kit (my first Rogers kit!) and it looks to be in very good shape. Thanks for all the information. It did come with a matching snare stand as a small bonus.

I don't think the bass drum hoops are original. They have an inlay (although the inlay is missing) but from the catalogs it looks like the hoops should be maple possibly. If that's the case I will look for some to complete the look. I'll post pictures once I have them cleaned up.

Congratulations on your first Rogers purchase! Some say the XP8 were the most well-made drums Rogers ever produced. You will enjoy their warm sound!

Earlier XP8 like you have will have BD hoops with inlay. 1983 or so.... They could be either Maple or black painted with inlay.

Do you know what color the inlay should be for a black kit with the black hoops? I need to replace one of the hoops and order some inlay material.
