Red Sparkle 50's Gretsch cleaned up nice

Retucked the one of the bass drum heads that came with the kit. This is the only one that was in any shape to be considered for a retuck.

It wasn't easy to get it to stay on the flesh-hoop - no natural glue to speak of left in the hide. I used clamps and kept at it and it looks like it might stay tucked. It's drying here.

Rail Mount mounted - Calfhide batter is working fine.

I'll use my trusty WFL Speed King pedal with this outfit. The calfhide batter with the Plastic Gretsch Ebony resonant head works......for me.

I love that rail placement and the short arm that keeps the tom tucked into the BD like that. Classic. Faucet T-rods, check! The calf head looks like it turned out very well.

Red sparkle was my first, always get a little jump when I see it...nice kit! :)

Amazing setup! Call me crazy but I always liked the Gretsch 13 16 20 setup. Tune it really low for rock or higher for jazz. With a progressive jazz setup the 12 and 14 limited your ability to tune really low. Great find and nice job!

Yeah, those original "bop" sizes are great. Congrats Kona, that is one special kit!

I think this is what I have - 1954 Gretsch Broadkaster "Bop" Outfit. Page 4 of the 54 Gretsch catalog.

The Hihat and snare stands, pedal (from what I can see here), the 3.5 inch cowbell and 7" woodblock with the combination block and bell holder and drums (14x20/9x13/16 floor and 5.5x14 snare) and K 15" cymbal (says medium weight 15 in description) are what I have. These items are listed in the left column. The K Zildjian - listed - is $33.....at today's dollars that's $221. The kit without cymbals was $435 as you can see.......today that would be about $3000. I think my 15"K may be 1945-1949 from the information I've gathered here.

The hardware case is a little rough - straps are gone but they can be bought online (steamer trunk repair website). The canvas cases are pretty bad but I will do what I can to save them.

I'm happy with the kit

From what, I'm seeing, I really like your vintage Gretsch kit.... the only thing I would do at this point is to find myself a NOS period correct front bass drum head to really make her look original & complete.
