Re-Wrapped my Rocker Kit Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Does anybody think I'm crazy to add a accent tom to this kit? I noticed that the lugs look similar to my kit and I have extra wrap to make them match. I would like another rocker tom but can't find any with the mini classic lugs and they cost so much on their own I would be talking about $80 just for lugs (most run about $10 each). With the accent all I would need a different tom mount.

something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ludwig-accent-combo-13-x-10-tom-metallic-red-/331756106042?hash=item4d3e34713a:g:tg4AAOSwLVZVkeCB

Not crazy at all. No one but you would know that the tom wasn't part of the original kit - they'll be distracted by the cool turquoise sparkle wrap, and I'll bet you can tune it to fit in just fine.

Check out this tom- it's close to the same era as yours and has the same lug hole spacing @1.25" o/c.

You'd need the tom mount, hoops, rods and lugs. I have a new mount, 12 small classic lugs, 24 rods and 2 used Ludwig hoops (with a little rust) I'd sell to you for $55 shipped. The lugs would have aftermarket screws though. If you'd like I can make an ebay listing for the items and send you the link. Here's a link to the tom.

thanks for the info, sounds like a good deal! Only thing is, I'm strapped for cash right now. I was thinking down the road to adding a tom. thanks for the offer though

No problem. I was holding on to the lugs for a future snare drum project, so I'll probably still have the items in the near future. Just message me on here if you want to buy them later.

If it was me, I'd get a US made Rocker tom like the one in the link. It looks like an exact match for your kit. The accent tom would still need a tom mount, but it'd work too. Good luck.

I like the red sparkle too so would like to give this a go on my Rocker kit. I note that you didn't take the original wrap off but I would like to remove the wrap. How easy is it to get the wrap off without damaging the wooden shell?

"If 'A' equals 'success' in life then 'A' equals 'X' plus 'Y' plus 'Z' where work equals 'X', 'Y' is play and 'Z' is keeping your mouth shut" - Albert Einstein.

...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

I've used a hair dryer to heat up the immediate area I was peeling back.

If you go slow prying with a putty knife of sorts, and do small sections at a time, the underlying maple (or poplar?) should be hard enough that you won't damage it. I haven't damaged the underlying maple with the several orphan shells I've de-wrapped.

I've applied a few doses of some sort of acetone to the glue residue to help remove it from the shell. Let it set a while with the product applied. The product I used was Goof Off, I think. Getting the glue residue off is a pain. Also, the wrap is very sharp and will cut you. Might want to use gloves.

Hopefully others with experience will chime in.

Gerard,

I have taken the wrap off of two Rocker kits. They both were just held on by tape, and I did it by hand with no tools - just slowly and carefully, and I had no problems and no splintering. Now of course your kit could be different...
