SRC! Scott Richard's Case!.....Is that right?
You must be from Michigan..........
They were big circa 1968 if I recall ...........
Cool band! Used to hang around Bob Segar and The Frost etc..............
Wow, The Frost! I haven't heard that name in ages. Damn, I'm getting old.
Allow me to tell you a little more about these drums which I believe are very special. The band SRC was a very popular band from 1967 through about 1972. They produced 3 albums with Capitol records that did quite well. Their sound was influential to many soon to be famous bands. For example, Peter Gabriel of Genesis fame, once stated that "He wore the grooves down on his SRC record growing up". When I listen to the first album I can hear where Genesis got their sound. In fact, historians are saying that SRC may be one of the first psychedelic bands on the scene.
The band has a web site, www.srcwebsite.com, which is well maintained and offers a ton of info on the history, pictures, members, music and other material. The best thing is there is a detailed itinerary that spans about 3 years, giving dates, venues and the acts they performed with. They starred along side a plethora big name bands of the emerging rock era. Like Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck Group, Grand Funk, Ted Nuegent, Alice Cooper, Rush, Bob Seger, just to name a few and the list goes on and on.
So what makes these drums special, and not just another set of vintage drums that we analyze, but a part of rock history, is that these are the drums that played all those shows and it can be prooven without a doubt. There are many pictures of the SRC band playing live at 10,000 seat venues and you can recognize these drums, mostly because of that drum head design on this set. You'll see in many of the pictures, only not as faded.
I don't believe one should restore these drums myself, but they should be left in the condition they are now.
The drums were handed down to the son of the drummer, E.G. Clawson who passed away about 10 years ago. The 2 pictures on the left are of the drums today. The one on the right is from about 1970 of Clawson playing.
I believe these drums to be invaluable.
I am curious what others may think. If you can, please visit the website and browse the pictures. Be sure to check out their SRC Time Line link and let me know what YOU think.
Nice.
Great information there. As for restoration, all I would recommend would be to replace what is missing with period correct items and cleaning to restore the drums to properly set them up, and prevent further damage to the edges and finish. That much restoration would not impact value.

Any chance that these drums are for sale? I'm a Detroit based drummer and really enjoy the musical history of the city. The SRC website is great! Thanks for your time.
I can't imagine the value would be much if any different from a similar kit. You can check eBay completed listings to get that info. There has been a bit of red onyx activity lately. Good luck.
yes, they are for sale.
