My 2nd Dynasonic on its way - question regarding rubber end caps Last viewed: 3 days ago

As some of you may remember, I had the good luck to find myself a very nice 1977 14x5" Big R COB Dynasonic some time ago. I became so enamoured with this fantastic instrument, that it ousted my previous go to jazz snare, a 14x6.5" hammered bronze Supra.

In fact, I was so taken by my Dyna that I have been on the lookout for another one since. I was actually looking for a 14x6.5" one, but then a week ago I came across a really nice-looking 1964-ish (serial no 3329) 7-line 14x5" Dyna at a price I couldn't resist. It is now being shipped to me from another town in Sweden.

So, one thing I will do with this drum is to replace the rubber end caps on its snare frame with new ones. I have found two sources for these: JP2 Creations and Barn Cat Percussion (eBay). The thing is, the caps from both sources look identical. But the JP2 caps are 12 USD for a set of four, while the BPC caps are only 7 USD. Is there a good reason why I should go with the more expensive caps?

I will of course post pics of the drum when I get it. And I will give it a Dawn bath, like I did with the Big R.

Just out of curiosity, if the original caps are still on the frame, why replace original parts with new copies?

Good point. From a picture of the snare frame I can see that at least one of the grey caps has been replaced with a black one, which is cracked to boot.

Wow, John, those look identical to the ones I asked about. Have you tried the Shelf Caps on a Dyna snare frame so you know that they fit?

Absolutely a beautiful snare drum Magnus N and one of my very favouites as the versatilty of this model is amazing! The rubber end caps on my 1966-7 liner don`t enclose the ends of the frame tips completely but hug the frame near the end and are original,sorry-no pics.The capped models that you are thinking about should be perfect but just wanted to let you know.Mine have turned yellow but still keep the frame from bumping up into the snare.

Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, it seems as though Dynasonics like me as much as I love them: I paid less for this one (app. 250 USD) than I did for the Big R. From the tracking info I can see that it should arrive today - so I am very excited.

I will give it a Dawn bath tonight, if it does arrive.

One thing: Do you know if the Purseound replacement snare wires will fit this kind of snare frame? If the original snares are ok, I will of course not bother with a replacement, but I am going to play this drum so perfect snares is a must.

I think I have seen pics of your 7-liner elsewhere while browsing for info on 7 line Dynas. If so, then it is a truly beautiful drum!

Interesting drum you found Magnus_N, and at a great price! Some of the features are noteworthy and perhaps you can confirm once it is in hand:

1. Appears to have what are referred to as high-boy hoops. They are deeper than those of later drums.

2. Rods all appear to have the same amount of thread vs shank. But the heads of the rods do not appear typical for the era of that serial number. Some of the Dyna experts to comment.

3. Clock face strainer is different than what I think I'm used to seeing.
