Minor setback! UGH! Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I found a '65 Ludwig virgin 18" bass in blue sparkle a few weeks back. Absolutely wasn't going to drill extra holes in it to mount the 12", so as Mr. Mike Layton proposed....Get the Ludwig Atlas ARCH. I indeed ordered one, and was totally impressed by this manufactured Ludwig part! Was designed for durability is to say the least. Stoked as I was, I planned on this morning to get it all assembled and set the kit up...quickly I learned that another part was needed. The mount arm is larger in diameter than the original tom mount. Now I have read in the past on a few posts here about this issue, but I obviously in my excitement missed that small bit of information when thinking this out. So, in waiting to find out exactly what is needed to complete it, I must wait to complete. I am sure someone can point me in the direction of the right mount needed for this to save me some time in searching and possibly getting the wrong item. I would appreciate it! UGHHH

They make a cow bell holder L arm that is smaller, wonder if that would work.

The bottom is 12mm but the rise is less, like maybe 10mm...I think. but it`s smaller going up.

Hi Nevin~! Sorry to hear about the troubles. I'm not a Ludwig guy so please forgive my dumb suggestions. :D But does your current tom mount use the eye bolts some Ludwig mount use? If so is it possible just to swap the eye bolt to a larger one that's correct for your new arm? Not sure how this all works but from my limited understanding that might be a option? BTW those drums are beautiful~! Ludwig blue sparkle is one of my favorite colors. Always loved that wrap color. Good luck and hope you find a easy fix!

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

That Atlas consolette looks awesome, was thinking about getting one for one of my non Ludwig kits.

Is it possible you can order a modern mount for your tom and just swap that out without altering your tom shell?

Maybe a Atlas tom mount that has the adjustable mounting holes like the rail, if Ludwig makes that?

I have already looked into that. Seems the mounting holes for the tom mount go to 1 11/16" and is made for the small to large classic lugs, not the mount at 1 7/8" center to center. Would buy it for sure if it would space out for the mount holes.

I am going to try to "alter/drill" out another mount I have to see if it works. It is a crusty pitted mess, and not a problem if it doesn't work. If it does work however, I will modify a nice one that I have.

Has anyone tried this in the past? Anything I should take in account before starting?

Thanks

Nevin

Drilling out seems like the easiest thing then. One could also make a hole adapter plate out of wood or soft metal like guys sometimes do to adapt strainers. Drilling sounds even easier now that I just said that, especially since you have an extra to practice on :D

What you need is the A.T.L.A.S. mount:

It replaces a lug, not the tom mount. I'm going to be doing the same on my '59 Downbeat.

You need a Gibraltar or Ludwig (both sell them) ball arm with a 9.5mm post. 9.5mm is 3/8ths of an inch which was Ludwig's standard for their floor tom legs, cymbal holders, fold out spurs, and tom "L" arms (all of which used that same bracket).

I have the exact same set up in red sparkle and did the same thing back when the Atlas Arch first came out. With the proper arm it works great.

YOU ROCK!

I knew there was an easier solution, just not knowing where to look. Just ordered one, and will have it Tuesday. Excellent looking kit as well!

Thanks again everyone,

Nevin
