Ludwig Standards

So a standard set with factory installed classic lugs will have the small casing on a 12" and a large casing on all the other drums?

And a standard that was swapped out to classic casings will have small casings on all drums Except the bass drum?

I love the original Standard drums! Attached are pictures of a beautiful S-300 kit I had back in the early 2000's, in Blue Mist. Sold the kit in 2003. The shells were the first-run issue, with white Resocoat interiors. Exact same shells as the Classic line! I certainly wouldn't call the hardware "inferior", just less expensive to produce!Even had the original front "Standard" bass drum head! As you can see, I did replace the straight BD legs with Ludwig fold-down spurs, using Standard tom brackets. Naturally, if I had the kit today, I'd leave it all stock! The "Jazz Festival" snare was killer!Mark

Love that color!! Screams Miami Dolphins. I don't see what swapping out the standard lugs to the classics would do...would just cost you more money. Standards look fine :)

Here are mine. 20,12,14 - I have the 14" snare too. The bass drum faded on mine. but not the other two drums. I use it for jazz. Sounds great.

Well... there's the problem. I've seen Standard kits in a variety of just weird configurations. On the one hand, I've seen one kit that had ALL large classic lugs. The guy was the original owner, said he'd never changed the lugs, and I believe him. Honestly, this fellow wasn't that interested and really had no clue what he had. I was a back up deal, and unfortunately, the first caller showed. $300.00 for the kit, an honest closet sleeper, blue strata. A C/L deal in a small town north of here (Chowchilla, Ca).

I've seen small classics on the 12, and regular large classic lugs on the rest. I've seen Acrolite lugs on Standard snares, I can't prove those were from the factory. Interestingly, the half dozen or so Standard kits that had 'odd' factory lugs, all had 'Standard' lugs on the snares (if snares were included).

I'd like to say you're right, but I really believe they just picked up whatever and stuck it on the shells.

I've NEVER seen a factory kit with mixed Classic and Standard lugs. I have seen one that was mixed, but it was obviously not factory. That poor kit had been 'improved' in many... interesting ways.

So once again with Ludwig just about anything was possible.

And there it is... just as you say.

Excellent case in point: While doing research for my still unfinished Ludwig 'B' line blurb, I came across an interesting catalog picture. Ludwig S/L (Standard Line) kits. The S/L's were a short lived last hurrah of the Standard's. Shown in the catalog, on opposite pages, were two configurations of S/L kits, one with Standard lugs, the other with Classic...

IN THE CATALOG.

I've seen the S/L ad you are talking about. Also the black and white rocker II catalog (which I always thought was '84 but says '86 on this site) there is a black Rocker 5pc set with classic lugs and curved spurs.

At the bottom of the page

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_rockers/1986_rockers4.jpg

A local music go round had one of these in white with granitone, classic lugs, rocker spurs ( not club dates, or curved) and a matching 5x14 instead of the normal chrome.

All these anomalies seemed to end with the introduction of the Asian Rocker's. I'm sure you know this, CD64, but for others that may not, that are reading this thread...

The original Rocker series (Black / White badges w/ USA on the far right) were again, US shells with who knows what hardware. When the Rocker's were farmed out to Asia (Black / White badges w/o USA on the far right) the hardware issue seems to have cleared up. I've been told, although never seen, that some of the very first Asian Rocker's with the black / white badge (no USA) had Standard Lugs, then went to the Asian Classic copies.

I don't have an interest in the non USA drums, so I haven't put any effort into looking at that.
