Is my bass drum a Radio King or a marching drum? Last viewed: 1 day ago

I recently purchased a 1930's (I believe) Slingerland 14x28 bass drum. It has streamline lugs found on early RK's. Is this a RK or a marching drum?

its a bd most marching drums are 12 inch or smaller for ease of marching very nice kit cant beat a rk for looks and sound

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

It's probably an undrilled BD. I have quite a few old Basses, & they are all before a time when the bass drum mount was invented. Toms were mounted on special brackets attached to the hoop. Marching drums will usually have some loop bolts on them for straps & carriers. They will also frequently be chewed up across the bottom.

this is most certainly a drum set bass drum not a marcher, it would have clamp on spurs and clamp on mounts for the toms. cymbals etc!! I have two 14x28" 30's Rks they are wonderful bass drum one has the same ply and wood makeup as your maple, popular, mahogany. but one is solid maple shell custom ordered for one of Bill Monroe's drummers the blue grass king.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

would be very unusual.

From Bill Armstrong

I never knew Bill Monroe to use a drummer.Name? Pictures? Him using a drummer in his bandwould be very unusual.

The family I bought this kit from some 12 odd years ago has since moved,But I made that very statement to the man who's son who was selling the kit, he had passed away in the late 80's so I never got to meet the original owner, anyway the son brought out a photo album with picture after picture with Bill Monroe and his dad Playing on both drums and a Martin D28 prewar and he was performing on some of the kit I have pictured, the providence I can't prove but that's ok I saw the pic's for myself If ever I sale the kit it would not be part of the selling point since I have no proof of said statement's. when I first bought the kit it was wrapped in fabric White vinyl type 1930's wall paper with hide glue, and that was what the picture album showed, I have since taken the kit back to factory original. I was actually going to do an article in Not So Modern Drummer Magazine about the history of the kit and it's unique construction, but as I stated my source moved away while I was doing the restoration job, which took me almost a full year to complete. Another story the son told about his father was when he was with Bill Monroe after Earl Scruggs, stating that Bill Monroe had changed his picking style after the Scruggs stint, and he needed his father to follow his thumb for the beat now. which has some truth to the story as Monroe Did change his picking style after Earl Scruggs 3 finger picking had been introduced in the band. I did notice in the photos it was a very short time period simply due to how their where all the same costumes that the band was wearing. with the photos being black and white the colors are in ones guess, but it is what it is so I'm good with it as a cool Radio King kit.

Mark thats one of my all time favorite kits you have!! I never get tired of seeing it. Must be a blast to play.

Jespo, really nice bass drum. I have a 12"x22" Slingy, same lugs, cloud badge and wrap color I bought a few months ago. Mine is only 6 lugs each side which is kind of odd. Nice looking kit!

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Here is a few videos of it in action. I played a gig with Travis Colby (keypboard player from Roomful of Blues) last week at the Dorrance in RI. The building used to be the old federal reserve. Perfect room for any vintage drum kit.

The toms are from my 56-59 kit. (I'm going to need help from you guys to identify the exact year/model on that one. New post coming soon.)

The snare drum is a Jeff Ocheltree.

O... yes... vintagemore2000's kit is AMAZING!!!!! Would love to see that kit in 'big band' action! :)
