Do people in the vintage drum world ever consider leaving patina on things? I dont think I see any true corrosion on the nickel that would need attention... Obviously the wrap on this old set could use some help, but I love the look of old nickel. :)

My son has a trick he uses to age new nickel and I have my ways to clean old nickle to help it look nice again. :) Nickel has a nice look to it. The pic below are some of the old nickel plated lugs I had to deal with. This is way past patina IMO. For me I like to clean things to give them a little luster. In some cases it's corrosion like on my bass drum lugs. The nickel finish is starting to bubble up as is the pot metal under with it. I chose to clean and polish those to help prevent them from getting any worse. I felt cleaning them the best I could would help preserve them longer being over 70 years old.

Glenn,

Good points.

I think I know that trick your son uses; I believe it is some sort of acid used to score electrical components for better solder adhesion (forgot what it is called). I think you somehow hang guitar parts over it in a closed container for a while etc.

My aged Telecaster has tuners done with that technique.

Hi Stephen. Yes it's something much like that. There's a few ways to do it and I'm not sure which process he uses. But the same results more or less. :)

Vinny,

Slight side note, but I PM'ed you or emailed you a few weeks ago inquiring about the Speed-King on your site. Can you send me a PM if you are interested in a trade or partial trade for my WFL? Thanks.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. :)

Very nice. I need to ride that Ventura Highway one of these days. Who knows what luck it could bring? And yes, suggestions on cleaning and restoring nickel would be great My attempts at cleaning an old nickel snare is going just so-so at this point.
