HELP! need cases for '69 Ludwig, any suggestions? Last viewed: 15 hours ago

Hi!

Just bought my first vintage kit and figured I'd join this great website! I had recorded a record a few months ago and used the studio's house kit - a 1970 Ludwig Blue Sparkle w/ natural interiors, re-rings, etc. Fell completely in love and had to have one for my own!

Searched for the right kit and I found a beautiful Sky Blue Pearl w/ Keystone Badge, natural interiors, re-rings... 14x22, 9x13, 16x16.

Based on the badge #s and the info that I've found on the internet, the toms are most likely late '68 and the kick is early '69. See attached photo.

I do a lot of touring and need road-worthy cases. Apparently SKB doesn't make a 14x22 case (which is crazy). I'm thinking about Humes & Berg Enduro or Enduro Pro. But I'm worried about the rail on the kick drum. Anyone have any idea if this kick will fit into a 14x22 Enduro or Enduro Pro? Any other recommendations for cases would be a great help!!

Welcome glad to see a very nice kit cant beat those old luddys i see no problem the cases have room for mounts etc good luck

You can cut an SKB case down pretty easily. Detach the fabric, cut the shell, stitch a new seam in the fabric and glue it back on. The glue comes off super easily, the plastic is easy to saw (and file), and you don't have to worry so much about damaging the padding because it's attached to the shell--just cover it back up with the re-stitched lining fabric. Looks as clean when you're done as you want it to...

I'm with caddy, but I would just leave the case stock it's only 2 inches difference. I have most of my drums in SKB all of my Ludwigs are 14" deep and are in the 16"x22,24,26 cases. I have H&B also but like the SKB far better it's a much better case also they stack together more securely and they have a lifetime warranty.

Even though there is only a 2" difference between a 22x16 case, and the hypothetical case for a 22x14 drum, there's more of a gap than that. When I put a 22x14 vintage Luddy into a 22x16 SKB case, there's about 4-5" of room from the top of the rim to the rim of the case. About 7" difference in the 22x18 case.

If it were me, I'd put some foam or a couple of pillows in the bottom of the case or something. If I were on tour, I'd store my pillow and sleeping bag in the case with the drum. That would keep them dry, for sure, and it would keep the drum from bouncing around in the case...

I use cadillac sack cases for my vintage Slingys. They are available at DrumMaker.com and are on sale right now. Although they are soft cases, they offer plenty of padding and keep the drum secure. I've had them for a year and am very happy with their construction and sizing.

SKB's are tough to beat. I use the extra room to keep a supply of standby heads.

I've used H&B Enduros for my Slingerlands for over 15 years. They work perfectly. Also, having a 14" deep kick drum, If the case were any deeper, I'd have trouble getting it in my car. I've changed cars 3-4 times in 15 years. My cases have stayed the same. Or should I say they've... "Endur(o)ed?"

I've had good experiences with H&B. My kick drum case came with the older style handle. After a couple years it snapped off. I sent them an email and the next day I had a new, heavier duty handle waiting in my mailbox, no questions asked. That was nice.
