Saw this on CL this afternoon. Look familiar? Thanks for looking.

6 lug BD is probably a typical MIJ. If the reso head is any indication it is Apollo which was a St. Louis Music stencil. The other bass drum and at least the one mounted tom look like they might be Gretsch. The wood hoops with gold sparkle inlay and the metal hoops on the potentially Gretsch kick are a little confusing, unless of course both kicks are the same size which they may be. In that case he just got confused when putting the drums back together after the re-wrap. Can't really tell about the floor tom, plus there is another floor tom not included in the photos. Interesting. Might be fun to offer a little less just to see what might be under the white wrap on those drums in question. Worst case scenario you build up a couple of cheap kits for a couple of deserving young folks, or a beater set or two for yourself.

Just from the pics...

The one BD with the "DW" sticker is a cheapy. Looks like it's probably a 22" or 24" and only 12 lugs. The one with the "Zildjian" sticker has 16, so it's a little better quality.

I would say they are either 60s/70s MIJs and 70s/80s MITs for the most part. Some of the drums have the typical "Asian" style lugs of the 70s/80s, some appear to have the 60s Slingerland knock-off lugs, and on the 16 lug BD they look like Gretsch lugs (but probably the knock-off variety -- even Ludwig used those on their Accent line for a while). The one tom appears to have a Tama-type of internal tone control.

IMO, $200 is a little high, but maybe OK if the hardware he has is in usable shape. These are the types of drums I like to pick up and build entry-level orphan sets out of (with my wood-veneer wrap I picked up so cheap!).

Just my observations,

Bill

Good observations, here!

The owner is a few hours from the drums but it looks like I can go to his parents house to see them tomorrow. The drums are maybe 4 miles from my place so I may as well take a gander at 'em.

I would agree but did you look closely at the bottom rack tom? Also, we're there any MIJ bass drums with Pratt mufflers? That drum has one or at least the knob for one. Hopefully a Gretsch expert will check in with us because I am intrigued.

Mick - They're 'Apollo' drums. Vintage MIJ's. Unless you need a 'beater' there's not much 'flip-ability' there. I've heard of people scoring kits like that for $20 at yard sales. Wait for one of those bargains.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks John, and everybody else that posted. I might just go pop a head off of the bass drum that has the Gretsch style lugs and see what it looks like in there. After all, a guy has to have social life!
