Duplex 15 1/2" Snare, NOB Last viewed: 2 hours ago

From Shawn M

Any ideas on where I can score 15 1/2" drum heads? The flesh hoops on the calf are whacky and splayed out (is there a way to fix this?) I could always re-tuck them but have a feeling the hoops are no good.

Hi Shawn,

If the original heads are intact, you can reinstall them as is. At least you know they are the right size!

You can buy unglued flesh hoops from Cooperman and size them to the drum yourself. Then you're ready to tuck the skins which will be a perfect fit.

Thanks Lee, they are intact save for 1 small hole in the batter near the rim.

I will just reuse them and play nice for now.

I need to spend some time on coopermans site.

Ok, I've got the drum all back together....now how is one supposed to tune a calf head snare?

Same methodology as a plastic head?

I made a leather snare holder and bought a few plastic G strings for a guitar.

I cant get it to sound like a snare at all Help2

If I loosen the "snares" then I can get some response from them, Im afraid to crank the heads down to much as I dont want to destroy them.

Could it just be my "snares" Im using?

BTW, setting up 6 pair of guitar strings as snare wires is a ROYAL PITA. Laughing H

so I removed the guitar strings and slapped on a set of 14" Puresounds...much better.

Now I need to get a set of proper 16" ones....maybe 15"

I had a Duplex with a different shell design but was very similar other wise. I think that you may be missing some parts on the one. I have attached some pictures of the way the snare throw off should look on both sides.

It would also appear that the top rim of the drum was on upside down when you got it, the carry loop on the rim should be on the top. I hope this helps

Thank you for info!

I think your drum is a later model then the one I have, mine is a bit more primitive.

However my reso rim has no empty holes for the strainer you have on yours. Wish it had that piece as it would make my life far easier.

I am missing the correct tension key for the snare and 2 correct tension rods. But it works as is, if I happen across the right parts I will scoop them up.

I have flipped the carry clip on the batter head when I disassembled and cleaned the drum, it is now in the correct position. The rim was on the correct way, the clip had been flipped.

That's an after market part, not a Duplex piece. It's the same throw used by F. E. Dodge and later Nokes & Nicolai in the early 1900s. Originally there would have been a simple leather snare butt there and all adjusting of the snares had to be done with the screw on the other side.

Regardless, that's a beautiful drum. I love the ornately perforated shell!

It does look like Shawn's drum may be short it's original snare tension screw on the other side though.
