Actually, all of mine have been favorites.
My first drum was a metal Folgers coffee can with a plastic lid. This was in the mid-60s, and my parents had already paid for over a year's worth of private lessons on the organ, and I quit 'cause I wanted to play the drums instead. They didn't think I'd stay with it (and want to play something else later), so that's all they would invest in...
Later, with my own money, I bought a Beverly Snare Drum at Avenue Pawn Shop in Pauline, Ks (just south of Topeka). Didn't come with a case, but the carboard box it came in had a built-in cardboard handle. Great stuff!
In either 1970 or possibly early 1971 I bought my first set -- a 50s Gretsch in WMP (14x20, 9x13, 6.5x14 SD, 19" KZildjian Ride & 13" KZildjian HiHats and later added a new 16x16 Gretsch WMP floor tom & a 10x14 Ludwig WMP Parade drum as another tom).
In late 1971 or probably 1972, I bought a brand-new Ludwig Rock Duo set in Champagne Sparkle (22/22/16/13/12). Got a good deal as I'd moved out of the "garage band" stage of my life and played with a large, BST-Chicago style group that Midwestern Music in Topeka helped to sponsor. Got all new AZildjian cymbals.
Played that set throughout most of the 70s, until it was pretty much destroyed in an accident after a gig out in Tribune, Ks (WAY out in western Ks). Had plenty of gigs lined up and no time to wait on Ludwig (they were 6 mos behind on orders at the time), so bought what Midwest Music in Hays Ks had -- a 1978 Pearl Wood-Fiberglass set (22/16/13/12).
Still have that set, and wouldn't trade it for anything! I don't play it out anymore. I left the music scene in the very late 70s early 80s after a dramatic change in my life (I got saved) and I played my Pearls in church for years (even as I pastored for over 21 years -- I think one of the few church pastors anywhere that played the drums in his church's worship band).
Don't play as much anymore as I'd like. Sit in numerous times as a back-up drummer on an electronic Roland set -- but it ain't quite the same.
I travel some as a solo music/preaching ministry (I still sing, as always), and maybe someday will work my drums into it...
Anyway, got to go to work, so the book is complete... for now!
