Just an FYI,as a former engraver/diemaker apprentice,If you have access to any kind of pantograph machine, even a ***lers Hermies pantograph, and those master letters, you can crank those out all day.Even experts will have a tuff time telling them apart.

Those brass plates are pretty much a stock item also.

Caveat emptor.

I am not the seller, but...

On Jun-02-11 at 21:13:40 PDT, seller added the following information:

OK. IVE BEEN GETTING SOME COMPLAINTS SAYING THIS DRUM IS A FAKE, AND DID NOT BELONG TO BUDDY RICH. TO MY BEST OF KNOWLEDGE AND HISTORY OF THIS DRUM IT DID. BOB GRAUSO MADE THIS CUSTOM DRUM FOR BUDDY, IT SAYS IT ON THE PLAQUE, THE MOUNTING SREWS FOR THE PLAQUE WERE EITHER COVERED UP OR NEVER DRILLED.DONT KNOW WHY. I SPOKE WITH BUDDY IN 1987 AT COLONY RECORDS STORE ON BROADWAY IN NYC, BEFORE HE DIED ABOUT THIS DRUM AND HE DID KNOW ABOUT IT. PROOF IT? NO I CANT. I AM TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF BOB GRAUSO IN FLORIDA TO ASK HIM ITS AUTHENTICITY AND PERHAPS A LETTER LIKE HE DID FOR THE GENE KRUPA DRUM RECENTLY SOLD. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME ANY QUESTIONS OR FOR MORE PICS. I AM THINKIN OF POSSIBLY RE-LISTING IT IF I HEAR BACK FROM BOB GRAUSO. ALSO THE LUDWIG INSIGNIA IS VERY HARD TO SEE BECAUSE I HAD THE DRUM RE-PLATED 5 YEARS AGO. QUESTION YOU MIGHT ASK YOURSELF, HOW MANY VINTAGE BRASS LUDWIG SHELL DRUMS WITH CUSTOM HARDWARE DO YOU KNOW ABOUT?

Ok, now I feel bad. I sold that Grauso drum and have since had so many people asking about how to get in touch with Bob, to have "their" Buddy or Gene drum authenticated. He's not in the best of health, and I hate that he would get bugged about crap like this. A drum with an excellent chance of being real is one thing, but this is like a bad joke. I paid Bob good money for his letter and time, but from what he said most people want "something for nothing". I'm taking down the snare and the image of Bob's letter, and hope he doesn't get bothered again.

Thanks,

Bill

I sent an eBay message to this person with a link to this forum and requested that he read all posts about his drum. He had previously said he was going to contact Bob G. about the drum. I just received an email from the seller saying that he found out that Bob passed away 2 years ago. Is that correct? I'm sure he ended the auction due to not being able to verify the drum with Bob. Pretty sure he took a beating from other drummers on this as well.

In the event that someone stumbles on this posting later, auction pictures are attached.

Ah, that's sad. It does look to be true with a google search, I'm surprised it wasn't more common knowledge. An obituary I found said that he passed in Nov 'of 09. The last time I spoke with him, in maybe July of '09, he was writing a book of his life story. Sad it will likely never get published...imagine all of the great stories he must have had. A very important man in the world of drums...he'll be missed...
