Buddy Rich owned snare on ebay?

Loading...

The seller has 2 other snares for sale. Pictures in each listing must have been taken at the same time, because a truck bumper is visible in the background of each. The guy's full CA license plate is shown in one picture, as is the reflection of his face in another. If this is a full - on scam, it won't be too difficult to track the seller. I've asked him a couple questions, let's see if he replies.

This kind of out-and-out fakery just chaps my hide. As TommyP knows, I do play "drum police" from time to time!! Already sent a message to this guy, basically calling him out and saying that if I'm wrong, have Bob G. provide authentication. Let's see what happens.

I live in CA, maybe about 2 miles away from my apt. For me it look real and not a scam.

Bid away my friend. Win it and learn a valuable lesson or two about the beautiful vintage drums we all so dearly love.

EDIT:

just got my response from the seller. It's a bit too ... colorful ... to print here. He spelled the dirty words correctly, so maybe there's a bit of intelligence behind his shenanigans after all. What a lovely bright spot he's provided for us all. Sweet thoughts and cookies sent his way, for sure.

I simply asked the seller for a picture of the case that is being sold with the drum and an interior shot of the shell. He agreed to send it. Stay tuned.

The cat either got taken himself and is passing it on unawares or not.

My question is that if one actually thought he had a drum owned and played by BR and built especially for him, then why would he re-plate the damn thing???????

Either totally unaware or totally running a very weak scam.... his target market is too knowledgeable to fall for it?????

Makes absolutely no sense ...............

the name plate/badge does "look" authentic, although Buddy rarely if ever had those actually engraved. I do have pics of Buddy's Bob Grauso built snare drums and not one of them has an engraved badge. They're all blank. Still... the badge does look authentic.

I found a badge from a known Grauso/Krupa drum. The ebay tag looks very similar.

Weird. Bob made FIBERGLASS drums, not pieced together projects like this one. His whole point and motive for making drums was to have the sound of a fiberglass shell.

There are many fakes around of nameplates, for Buddy, Gene, etc. There's a guy in Westchester County, NY, that made fake Buddy and Gene snares for years, passing them off as real. They always have a few tell tale signs. What's strange about this snare is that the nameplate is DEAD ON right looking. I mean exact, to a tee, of the way Bob's nameplates always looked. The fonts, spacing, screw locations, everything. All of the fakes I've seen had certain key details wrong.

I guess it is slightly, slightly, possibly that Bob made this snare as some kind of project, and gave it to Buddy. But I seriously doubt it. I would be more inclined to believe that the nameplate is legitimate, taken either from a real drum or from Bob himself, and added to this strange snare.

Thanks,

Bill

From Nate

new here, but it looks like an acrolite shell to me.

Welcome! Nate. There are many shells that have the center bead, made of various materials. This is a brass or bronze plated shell, but I don't think it is an Acrolite. Acrolites are made of an aluminum alloy and I doubt this is that shell. More than likely it's a whatever over steel. There is nothing about this dude that is even remotely like anything BR ever played, as TommyP stated. Just some guy trying to make a fast buck at the expense of others' ignorance.

"Ignorance may be overcome through education. Stupidity, however, is a lifelong endeavor." So, educate me, I don't likes bein' ignant...
