Buddy Rich' cymbals for sale on the bay Last viewed: 2 hours ago

K.O./Oddball!!

That is correct! In many cases Buddy's Zildjians had BR stamped underneath... and just as many didn't, especially so later in his career. As to were these really Buddy's:

Earlier in his career, Buddy used to visit the Zildjian factory in Quincy, MA and hand pick his own cymbals. I chatted with Lennie DiMuzio on a couple different occasions PRIOR to his even writing "Tales From The Cymbal Bag", and he was very forthcoming with a lot of this inside information. Buddy picked his own!... and he was PICKY... and could be a tad difficult. What a surprise!!! But he was always Buddy! After BR had a nice pile, the folks at Zildjian would put them aside for him, and in most cases stamp them with an INK STAMP that simply said: Special Selection BR . Buddy would draw from the collection as needed. In many cases he would have them shipped to where he was if he needed replacements. LATER in his career, Lennie picked them for him. According to LD: By that time, I KNEW what Buddy wanted with regard to weight, sound, etc. During all of this:

Buddy had a storage "room" at a prominent NY hotel. It was here that ALL this stuff was stored as he changed drum companies, moods, etc. Also stored there were BR band stands, all matter of drums!, cymbals, uniforms, music/arrangements, and it goes on. So... yes, that set for sale is real. After Buddy's passing a lot of this stuff kinda disappeared... into certain collector's hands. And now, a bunch of it is surfacing FOR SALE as everyone gets... older ... and is more interested in generating some CASH FLOW, especially so in this still slow economy.

I ended up chatting at length with a trombone player who was on BR's band during the early 80's. He recently sought me out as someone had suggested he contact me for any questions regarding BR's drums/cymbals/hardware/endorsements. I was flattered actually! Anyway... he is the one that filled me in on the storage room at the NY hotel.. because .. he HAS some of BR's cymbals and one of Buddy's actual Slingerland BR/TDR's in WMP. These items came out of that exact storage room. Great stories too!

Truth be told... I'm not going to bid 'till the last second. I'm gonna SNIPE 'em! They are indeed "one of" Buddy's cymbal sets.. ( more on that later ) .. but as I have maintained, WAY TOO expensive. Buddy has been gone for 27 years now.. meaning .. a drummer born on the year of his death is now 27, and probably not all that familiar with Buddy. That has been what I have seen anyway. I ask a lot of younger drummers if they know who Buddy Rich is/was. The answer almost always is: Hmmmm... I think I've heard the name... point being:The true collector of BR stuff... is us!, and not many, if any, are interested in ponying up $30,000.00 for a set of cymbals that Buddy owned/played. There was a much better chance of selling these if they were offered within 5 years of Buddy's passing. His star was still shining brightly and his memory lived on! Not so much 27 years later I'm afraid, although his influence on ALL drummers will never burn out. Truthfully, in my opinion only... the cymbal set would probably sell at the $4,000.00 to $5,000.00 range... and be worth it to a true Buddy fan. And...Yeah Dan! They would look/sound GREAT with a nice set of 1965 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's! I happen to know of such a set too! Tommyp

I'm 35 and just started playing seriously in my early 30s and I had to learn about the man through others and the internet so what you say about drummers younger then me is absolutely correct.

It would be cool to know the BR recording these cymbals were used on.

Owning a set of Buddy's cymbals would be like owning one of Babe Ruth's bats....

The original flat ride cymbal which Paiste made for Joe Morrello sold for around 18 grand, if I recall correctly...so who knows what these are worth?

robbie!

Agreed!, and Joe Morello... goes without saying FABULOUS player!, and an incredible career.. but .. he has been gone but 3 years now.. thus .. this is the time to SELL items owned by Joe! There are many fans that would love to have some of his drums/cymbals, as shown by the selling price of that Paiste flat ride. 18K... WOW! Buddy on the other hand, as I have maintained, has been gone for 27 years now, and that makes all the difference I think. The BR fans, the TRUE BR fans, are us! Not many will/could spend 30K on a set of his "A" Zildjians... although we would love to! That said:

I always thought somebody with DEEP pockets would have grabbed those by now, and/or his Fibes COF set that Donn Bennett has too. But... I honestly think the price is way too high, and Buddy has been gone way too long. I do miss him though!, but do my small part in keeping his memory/legacy alive! My avatar is a nice example of that!

I bought a 1960s 18" thin A. Zildjian crash on eBay that the seller said was hand picked from the Z vault by one of the "high ups" at the factory for Buddy's nephew. I can't verify that story is true, and there are no special markings on the cymbal, but it does sound FANTASTIC!

$29.995.00 for a set of Cymbals used be Buddy Rich. I'm a big fan of Buddy Rich but I can think of a lot better things to do with that kind of money.
