another roger swivo tom arm question Last viewed: 26 minutes ago

There will always be the rims vs non-rims debate. Truth be told, yes, I can tell that my Rogers 8x12 rack tom is choked when compared to having it on a stand. Doesn't bother me a bit! Most of the finest drum sounds of the 60's and 70's came from toms with non-rims mounts. Actually, the same holds true for all kits that came standard with tom mounts attached directly to the shells. Funny, but did drummers really notice the difference back then?

Of course they did. That is what drives innovation and that is why isolation mounts were developed. I personnaly find it frustrating to have tuned a tom to the point where it sings and then put it on a mount that chokes it. To each his own but I prefer hearing all a drum can be.

We also used to think a 4:3 CRT SD TV had a fantastic picture.

Idrum4fun's suggestion of final tuning on the mount is practical, however, it just shed's additional light on the issue. The drum sounded great on it's own but now we have to 'fix' it now that it is mounted. Hmmm...

hello helpful people, another question. like so many drumkits, the 12" tom on my new/vintage rogers kit chokes when I put it on the arm.on my almost vintage yamaha kit (1980) and many others, it has always helped to cut the arm down so that there was a minimal amount of it inside the drum. does anyone have experience about doing that with swivo stuff? the tom arm that came with the kit is one of the long ones, not the short one I've seen with some kits.the drum sounds pretty good all the way out on the end of the hex rod, but it's in an unplayable position at that point, and still it sounds better when I'm holding it in my hand.resonance iso mounts on a vintage kit? that's just WRONG....

I have a buddy who's Slingerlands do the same thing on the 12'', he tried rim mounts, running it off a cymbal stand, the only thing that seemed to work was putting it on a snare stand.

Maybe they did, but maybe they didn't care, because you know what else choked those toms?.... the factory installed tone controls which were designed to choke the toms. To this day, I still detest a tom that rings too long, especially this MIC stuff with razor-sharp bearing edges that make the heads sing like timpani.

And manufacturers aren't using those tone controls anymore for exactly that reason. A lot of guys really like a drum sound that has very little if any sustain. I understand that and that is fine. The difference between the drum sound on or off the mount would be hardly noticeable. There are also a lot of guys (like myself) that prefer an open drum sound whether it is a 60's round over or a current double 45. If you tune that way it is an issue and we have tools available to us to solve the problem. It's not for everyone but that doesn't make it wrong.
