another roger swivo tom arm question

Loading...

hello helpful people,

another question. like so many drumkits, the 12" tom on my new/vintage rogers kit chokes when I put it on the arm.

on my almost vintage yamaha kit (1980) and many others, it has always helped to cut the arm down so that there was a minimal amount of it inside the drum. does anyone have experience about doing that with swivo stuff?

the tom arm that came with the kit is one of the long ones, not the short one I've seen with some kits.

the drum sounds pretty good all the way out on the end of the hex rod, but it's in an unplayable position at that point, and still it sounds better when I'm holding it in my hand.

resonance iso mounts on a vintage kit? that's just WRONG....

I haven't heard any difference in tone or "choking" from Swivo mounts with different length posts. You are correct that there is a certain amount of choking with almost all non-rims style holders. Still, I've always been able to get good tone from all my vintage bass-mounted rack toms. The trick is to do the final fine tuning with the tom mounted on the holder.

As to cutting down the post to lessen the length that protrudes into the shell, I say "don't do it"! If you know that you will NEVER sell the kit, I guess you can do whatever you like, but, if you think that you might sell the kit sometime down the line, the vast majority of interested buyers would certainly like non-modified hardware! Just my two cents!

Spend the 75 bucks and buy a short one. The long will still be worth at least as much.

Or....... find a bass drum with the mount located in the swingtime setup configuration.

I've never played Rogers so I wouldn't know, but I have had this problem with Amati tube mounts, similar to old Sonor, Premier, and the like. I found out that positioning the drum just on the end of the tube helps a bit and removing it from bass drum and mounting the mount on a stand helps a lot. Also, snare stand helps, with certain tunings.

If you hear that the drum is choking then it is. Simple as that. I do, in fact utilize RIMS mounts on my vintage drums because they sound better. Again, simple as that It does not alter the drum in any way and you can remove them for photos if you like. If I can hear the difference it is because there is a difference. If that difference doesn't matter to some then that is fine as well. It's the same reason I install shock mount feet on my floor toms.

I have 3 roger kits..

63 / 66 / 69

two have the one rack tom and the 69 is the Londoner dble tom set up

*My 63 uses the single LONG arm..

I've never noticed the choking on the toms.

However I've noticed that theres a lot of Transferrence from my snare when striking my 12" Rack tom..

So I've put it on a R.I.M mount & its mounted to my main cym std

Problem solved..

with all due respect sir, you are mistaken. there is a marked difference between the tom all the way up the arm and at the end, and if you like, I will make a recording of the 2 and post it. the difference is not subtle.

There will always be the rims vs non-rims debate. Truth be told, yes, I can tell that my Rogers 8x12 rack tom is choked when compared to having it on a stand. Doesn't bother me a bit! Most of the finest drum sounds of the 60's and 70's came from toms with non-rims mounts. Actually, the same holds true for all kits that came standard with tom mounts attached directly to the shells. Funny, but did drummers really notice the difference back then?

Personally, I don't care for rims mounts, simply from a cosmetic point of view. I want to see the drum, not the mount! Again, that's just me. I've no doubt there might be situations where a rims-mount tom would be required. I just haven't required them!
