90th anniversary Ludwig Top Hat drum set Last viewed: 5 hours ago

There could certainly have been more than three made, but I'm sure they weren't made to celebrate the 90th anniversary. Jack Lawton didn't make the drums for Ludwig, all he did was make the replica wrap (which he may still do to this day). Ludwig ordered it for the snare drums, and I'm sure Todd Trent thought it was cool, as did Bun E., so they just ordered up some wrap from Jack and had Ludwig apply it to a couple of kits. You can do that as well today....when you custom order a kit from Ludwig, they will build it however you want it. There is a checkbox on the orderform for "customer supplied" wrap.

Black Label Drums or Stauffer Percussion Just Made a set Wrapped in This very same wrap for a customer. They will make a kit for you with any type shells you want, even Vaughncraft Steam Bent 1ply. They have pics at their site of the set, and yes its the Top Hat and Cane wrap.

Well, I finally landed a 90th Anniversary Top Hat set. So I called Jack Lawton to find out how many of these sets he did and the answer is... 18-20 drum sets. He also told me that he used all of the Top Hat wrap and there is no more. I will post some pictures when I get the set home. I feel good about the fact that there is only about 20 sets out there. It will be a nice match to the 90th Anniversary Top Hat snare that sits in its leather case. I never thought I'd find one of these sets for sale. Yes Sir I got one!

AWESOME...Please post some pictures when you get a chance. Can hardly wait to see them!

The Stauffer THC kit belongs to a friend of mine. It is not the same wrap that Jack L used or supplied to Ludwig. They had it made up just for that kit. The Stauffer kit is not a Ludwig, nor was it meant to look like a Ludwig. The owner is using Rogers swivo hardware on it and has it set up in a BR configuration and the lugs look like the vintage slingerland beavertails. I had the pleasure of playing it and it is one of the best sounding kits I have heard. All shells steam bent single ply! It is also featured in MD as the Drum Kit of the month. Great workmanship.
