70s Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 1 day ago

Is anyone aware of Ludwig issuing a kit in 1970 with 12",13" & 16" toms and a 20" bass drum? I'm aware of the "Big Beat" and "Hollywood" kits but unless I'm mistaken both of them came with 22" bass drums. Am I mistaken?

Thanks!

You are correct and, no, there was no such catalogued setup.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Could it be a special order?

Yes. In some cases, a different size bass drum was ordered by a customer. Unfortunately, the collectible value is almost nil for such custom ordered drum sets even when the badge numbers and shell dates indicate a matched set.

THANKS for all the feedback. All the serial numbers on this kit are extremely close and the kit appears to be in immaculate condition with absolutely no modifications of any sort or any extra holes in any of the shells. However, I didn't realize that an original custom-ordered kit wouldn't have any collectible value.

That's true.

And it may have value as a "player's" kit. (I actually prefer the 20" bass drum size over the 22" as a musical instrument) But, as a collectible set of vintage drums, there will be little (if any) interest. Why? Because catalog-referenced "named" configurations are the thing collectors want. They want what Ludwig named as a configuration -not what a customer ordered. It's just the way the collecting game is played.

Again, that fact has little bearing on what a player might want to play.

Soooooooooooooo.....What would be considered a "fair market price" for a kit in this configuration (12/13/16/20) in excellent condition, both functionally and cosmetically speaking, in original silver sparkle wrap? Any thoughts?
