60's Ludwig Downbeats in Black Galaxy Sparkle Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Hi everyone.

I haven't posted here in a while, so I thought I'd show off a really nice old kit I inherited. I don't have a ton of information on it, only that it's a sharp little kit from the 60's. It's a Ludwig downbeat in the black galaxy sparkle finish. 12" rack tom, 14" floor tom and 20" kick. It didn't come with the original snare, but a nice Ludwig snare all the same. Although it's not all shown in the pictures, it also came with some really nice Ludwig hardware and peddles, that I'm currently either using, or cleaning up. Speed king peddle, etc. One of these days I plan on cleaning them up reeeaaal nice. There are a few scuffs here and there, but all in all it's in fantastic shape. It also came with some really nice old Zildjian hats and cymbals. Anyways, hope you all enjoy!

Avery - I hope you can appreciate what a great and rare kit that is. The finish on that set of drums is among the rarest when it comes to vintage Ludwigs. The finish alone adds a -lot of value- to the kit.

Take real good care of them. By all means, play and enjoy them, but always with a mind to preserving them as best you can for the future. You're a lucky guy! I have a good friend who gets all 'glassy-eyed' when he sees Blk. Galaxy anything. If you have anybody you'd like rubbed out, he would kill for those! (He'll be posting here the second he sees your kit! lol)

Great sizes... 14" floors are my favorite 'sounding' tom in any set-up.

More photos please! BTW, I 'think' I see a baseball-bat muffler on that rack tom. If so, the kit was made in 1963! The muffler dates it to that specific year... post the serial numbers on the badges, I bet when we check the charts, the numbers will date the drums to 63'. They may even be pre-serial! My SBP Hollywood kit is a pre-serial 63'.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

hey-i think i know that guy!!!!:p

beautiful drums avery. i love em! ive got a galaxy clubdate kit, a couple snares and a new reissue galaxy throne(i hear that ludwig has exited the throne making end of the business). i think youre really gonna enjoy those.

john-the red felt baseball bat mufflers did make an entry around 63. they continued until early 65 when the white felt mufflers came about. those hung around until mid 68 when the 1" round knob mufflers were introduced..

i'm sure that you all are tired of seeing these, but i just gotta post them! 22,13,15.5x14 pioneer.

Since Mike posted his, I will follow suit.

Mine is also a 12/14/20 set , but has the 4x14 snare.

I bought mine off Craigslist from someone who was 5 miles away.

Hey!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm glad my drums are a hit.

John, these drums do have the baseball-bat mufflers on them. I have looked extensively and could not find a serial number on any of the drums. Does that mean they're pre-serial and just completely without a number, or am I just missing something?

Mike, great drums! I like the clubdate kit. Very cool! My drums do have the red mufflers on them, so I suppose that puts them somewhere from 63-65?

Great drums, Rick! I'm jealous that you have the snare as well! What year are yours?

Soon I'll take some pictures of the snare and hardware that came with it to get some info on them. Thanks everyone!

avery-probably 63 like john mentioned if they are pre serial and red felt mufflers! prior to that , the pre serials had 3/4 round knob mufflers.
