'58 Ludwig Trans Badge Kit!

From ElMoonlightDrummer

I guess for me, the look/color was what I wanted them for...but probably going with coated Ambassadors or even the Vintage Ambassadors. I have those on my 2006 Ludwig classic maple kit and they sound fantastic!

The Remo Suede heads look nice to me. You'll probably have to special order them. The one that I've been able to put my hands on looked more like a calf head to me than anything else. Take a look at those and see what you think.

I hear the Vintage Ambassadors are great but, remember, Remo is having some quality issues with their coating right now...just saying. I'd hate for you to go get some and trash the coating in an hour.

I am not a fan of the Evans clear reso heads, they make the toms sound too tinny for me

That has been my assessment of them also. I'm not too fond of many Evans heads, honestly. G1s and G2s are great depending on the application, but I haven't found a snare head that I like from Evans.

I'm no guru, just a vintage drum junkie!

I hear ya...I've never been an Evans guy...and flirted with Aquarian...only to find that I still love Remo heads the best!

I have been digging the DW coated heads made by Remo. They are crimp locked instead of glued so they resonant better.

Actually...maybe I'll give those Suedes a whirl...forgot that I wanted to try them. What do you think of Diplomats as resos? Ever used them? I used them once on a modern Gretsch Catalina kit with emperor batters and they sounded really good...just couldn't get enough sound out of the 18" kick, so I got rid of it.

El - Try Evans EC II single-ply 'control heads' for the reso's on the toms. Excellent heads, great on any vintage toms I've used them on. Buy one, try it, if you like the sound, outfit the rest. I like Evans G1 or G2's for batter heads. They're like really good Emperors only better!

Great kit, amazing score, nice job on them.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I love clear Diplomats on the bottoms. They're working for me on Yamaha RCs (clear Pinstripe batters), 3-ply Slingerlands (coated Ambassadors), and clear Vistalites (clear Ambassadors).

I've only used them as snare side heads on a low-end Mapex basswood snare and an Acrolite. Worked fine there, but I couldn't give an opinion on them as tom reso heads. I hope you find a combo that make the hair on your arms stand up, though. Good luck and, again, very nice job!

So...I had the awesome opportunity to play a pre-game "Viva Los Dodgers" event at Dodger Stadium yesterday. Not only did my '58 Luddys sound fantastic all mic'd up, but they couldn't have matched the occasion any more perfectly, either!!! I ended up switching the heads on the toms to coated Remo Emperors and am really happy with their sound now! Anywho...just wanted to share a pic of the cool gig I got to play.
