Single ply coated heads seem to be the head of choice around here. I am really getting into a new head that Aquarian is now making. It is the Z-100 coated. The coating is not like the Remo that flakes off for no good reason and they are more supple than the Remo or Evans heads. If your local dealer doesn't ave them, you can order them from Aquarian directly. And they handle brushes extremely well!

Hey guys! Sorry to slightly alter the discussion here... I have a 1966 Sparkling Silver Pearl Club Date set that's all original and in excellent condition. I don't have a snare or can find information on what snare came stock with the 1966. Was it maybe a Pioneer or and Acrolite? Maybe someone here knows for sure.

Many thanks!!

vintagemore is right on track. get whatever you'd like as you could have bought any of those back then.

the 62 catalog has clubdates shown with jazz festivals, the 64 with pioneers and the 67 with acrolites.

Thanks guys!! In the meantime, I've been using a 1964 Slingerland Deluxe Student Model in Sparkling Silver Pearl (basically the same as the 6 lug Pioneer). What would you go with?

Thanks again!!

The Slingerland is a good drum to use. really any of the ones we've mentioned would be just fine, I like jazzfestivals, acros, and supraphonics

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Either way, yours are going to be 3-ply shells with re-rings. Look inside the drum, or at the bearing edge. Dark/reddish wood will be Mahogany, light inner or outer plies will be Maple, all central plies will be Poplar. The 3-ply mahogany/poplar/maple lay-up was used with mahogany outside for wrapped kits and reversed with the maple outside for painted kits. There are also maple/poplar/maple shells. You need to take a close look at your bearing edges.

John

Too many great drums to list here!
