It would be good to get more information on the snare drum. A snare like that might be worth a couple of hundred or perhaps as much as $1000 if it is made of brass. Outwardly they look the same but the difference in possible shell material (aluminum vs. brass) is significant. The change over between the two materials happened around 1962 so it's hard to say for sure. If it has a small knob to control the internal muffler there's a good chance it might be brass (more valuable). Condition effects the value as well.
1961 Ludwig drum set question
Need some help.My Dad recently passed away and I am trying to sell his drum set for my mom.Its been stored in my grandma's basement since he was drafted to Vietnam. The stamp on the inside says 61 but some of the pieces might be 65-68?Condition is good. What's the asking price? What other info do I need? Thanks for your timehttp://stlouis.craigslist.org/msg/5599470038
is there is 1961 date stamp inside all the drums? Are any of them white on the inside? Do all four badges have a serial number? It's unusual, but far from impossible for a 1961 shell to have a serial number badge. Do you have the drums sizes? At first I thought it was an 8 lug 20" bass drum. Not I'm thinking it may be a 10 lug 22" inch BD. Its not that clear in the photo. And if it is and the floor tom is 16", it would make this a very desirable silver sparkle Super Classic set depending on condition. Without seeing any close ups of pitting and damage to the wrap, and the condition of the shells, the only visible problems are the missing original rail mounting hardware for a single tom, the missing front t-rods, the absence of a bass drum badge where I would have expected it, on the top center of the BD a little nearer to the front lugs, and most troubling the drilling of the bass drum for the non original double tom mount. A pure collector might balk at the double mount being added, but someone looking strictly for a vintage set in good condition to gig with might be very pleased with it, even though it is not "pure"! I would say at least $1400 for the 4 drum set, not including the snare drum or the cymbals.
Depending on what the cymbals are it could increase the value substantially, but I'm guessing early '60s A. Zildjians, and if so the cymbals all together would be around $400 or less. The value of the snare drum will depend on whether its brass. And of course there is the hardware. You didn't show the bass drum pedal.
If I had to venture a good price for everything, if its in as good condition as it looks, and especially if its a Super Classic set, I would set an asking of $1900 (to stay below an off putting $2000 price tag). But I would settle for $1600 - $1800 if the potential buyer seems serious and wants to bargain.
