I bought a 4 piece drum set, I did some research and to me the badge is pretty close if not identical to 1948-1952 Ludwig, however, I'm having a hard time matching up the lugs and the finish to the year. The kick drum is 26x16, 16x16 floor tom 6 1/2x14 Snare and a 13x10 tom. any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I'll put some more pics up.
1948-1952? Ludwig, not sure of year Last viewed: 3 hours ago
Here's the link for the pictures of the drums.
REALLY cool kit! Where did you find it? The bass and toms seem to have the Zephyr lugs from the early 1940s (see www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets_1941.html) and the snare looks like the Soloist Special on that same page (upper left). I'm sure the gurus can nail it down for you. I was just browsing the catalogs. Anyway, great find!
Thanks GG, I found it at an antique/consignment shop in Wells, Maine while on a weekend vacation, of all places. I'm trying to figure out how much it'll cost to have it restored, the kick drum is got the most damage over the years (water) some cracks in the wrap, hope once it gets looked at, that it's only on the surface.
The catalogs quit showing WFL drums with Zephyr lugs several years before they actually stopped producing them. I have the same badges on mine. I'm jealous... you have a floor tom !!
I'm not certain, but that doesn't appear to be a wrap ? Are you sure it isn't the outer ply of maple that has developed some splitting for some reason ?
All the outfits I've seen so far from that era were either wrapped or painted white.

Yes, the close up of the badge makes it pretty obvious that the drum it's on has been stripped and sanded down to a natural finish. I.e., the edges of the badge and the grommet are sanded down somewhat, and some sort of clear coat has been applied over it. Not sure that grommet is original either - would it have originally been some sort of brass?
Just a guess, but since it appears to be a fairly crudely done job, there's no evidence of any paint around that badge, I think it's possible these were originally wrapped (rather than painted) before being stripped down to wood.

I just added a few more pics up to the link I posted above, a close up shot of the kick drum, it shows where the "wrap" is coming apart from the shell, and the type of lugs on the kick too. and when it comes to trying to match the finish to the year, all I've seen so far has been some variations in color to a sparkle finish. I'm guessing that probably at some point it was stripped down and re-done.
They were Duco drums that someone stripped down..........
Pearl wrap didn't stick to Mahogany too well,so under all Duco finishes is maple!
I have the correct tom mount if you want to buy it......someone put a RK one on your drum........
Too bad about the Luddy mufflers/RK FT brackets added to snare/tom.
Is that one of the BD hoops that fell apart?
I found some stuff at Meijer called Blue Magic for $6 in a pretty big jar that works well on nickel.......polish those puppies up!flowers2

Great set !!.The rims look like stick choppers at the biness end and flanged from there down. The early 40's badge on my snare is silver alloy, you have a blue cast on yours. They had no idea there would ever be " vintage " drums.Same lugs as on my snare with long tension rod inserts.Cool set.
Hey Laker, thanks! yeah the rims certainley will destroy sticks in half the time of the more conventional rims! I not sure what duco Drums are, according to what the last guy said, just curiuos, as to what you mean about the blue cast on the snare, the rim? I'm just a novice on the vintage kits. thanks for replying!
