Thoughts on this drum on eBay
I've got a backup snare like this from Pure Percussion. Its maple and it sounds fine. The one above i think would be just fine as a back up snare.

leave it alone. You'll never get a perfectly even cut, and then you will have the problem of making new bearing edges. I'd leave it!
