Jeff, These are Star made sets the one you posted is from the late 60's to about 1972..The lugs are not off-set on the drums so if i recall right these would be the 4 or 5 ply shells with rings or they could be the 3 ply thin shells with rings also the bass drum and floor tom would also have a ring in the middle of the shell a total of three rings..The photo is it that good but the drums look complete and not missing any parts and they look clean so at 200.00 would be a good price but i would try for 150.00.Mikey
With snare and hardware included?
Seems like a good deal!!
maybe you could ask some more detailed pics ;)
These should have the 4 ply shells with re-rings. (hence the "Semi-Pro" designation)...not that they are anything close to pro drums, but a good player, simply a good kit. The actual color, if anyone is interested, is simply called "Oyster Pearl". Tuning range is pretty decent for these shells, you don't have quite as much highs, but decent mid and low end. Not really loud drums, because of the lauan shells, but mic'd up, they perform admirably, and should record well with single ply coated heads on top and clear or coated on the resonant side. For the bass I would use an Evan EQ 1, the translucent one, not the clear or coated, can't quite recall the exact name of the head at the moment and since my kit is not set up right now I can't get to it to get the model off the head.
As for the resonant side of the bass, this is kinda funny, but I "recycled" my original weathermaster single ply, plastic head with nothing more than good ol' Rustoleum Ivory spray paint. I use the entire can for each head as I have found, when properly applied and allowed to dry and cure in a mid to low humidity drying space, it will gain the consistency of a medium weight calfskin resonant head and is, typically, very supple and needs very little extraneous muffling, other than to control ring.
I have one "Semi-Pro" shell left and it is a 14" floor tom, sounds really good too. As for pricing, I'd try for 125, since they may need new heads.
OK, thank you so much. Have to drive a ways to get so we will see. I am now just looking for cool sets to keep for myself. I have accumulated some nice stuff latley and have just decided to keep most of it. I have been waiting for something other than a sparkle. Looking very hard for some old blue and olive or keystone Ludwigs mabye white marine pearl? But thats part of the fun, the search!
Jeff
Jeff....200 sounds high unless youre getting all the hardware.
