Very cool article. Might I mention a great DVD that EVERYONE should check out at some point? Its called "Standing in the Shadows of Motown: the story of the Funk Brothers". I highly recommend it to any fan of classic motown. ;)
Heck yes... + 1

I got the DVD from my son as a Christmas gift a few years back. Being born and raised in Detroit I really enjoyed it! The bands I played in during my grade school and high school years played nothing but Motown tunes. We actually had Spyder Turner's younger brother, Robin, as our lead singer for a short period. Those were GREAT times!
I must have given a half dozen copies of that one to people as gifts. The bible, and the best educational video I've ever seen. "Heatwave" is like the textbook on how to shuffle. And we won't even go in to "What become of the "Broken Hearted" Is Joan Osborne single????? Super hot! Walmart had it in their 3 for $10 bin........
Talk about good timing
A place in town is showing it next week on the large screen for $5.......
They serve beer/wine too!
Here's an article published in "Modern Drummer" that I think you'll find interesting: http://www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull/200001778/%20%20Secrets%20Of%20Motown
Great article Old School.
And I saw "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" a few months ago too. Interesting show.
Ah, I just can't get enough of the drum sounds and production on all those Motown albums. Truly classic!
Yeh that kick sound on 'you can't hurry love' is exactly what I'm talking about!!
Thanks for the heads-up on the modern drummer article. That was an interesting read - funny how that great sound came from a bunch of gear cobbled together!! I remember seeing the dvd a few years back too; think that needs a re-watch!
Man, Heatwave is my definitive shuffle song - the shuffle to end all shuffles!!! And those drags and accents he slips in, genious!!!
I always thought he played the shuffle on HH & snare, but I read somewhere it was all played on the snare with someone else playing tambourine over the top. Is this true??
