Cool so the rims are COB, the magnet wouldn't stick to the shell unless it was a steel shell which was out also! I think this is a cob drum is there a stamped B inside the shell or outside the shell? probably not! with it not having any pitting that on your side also either way man this was a good buy you scored! I wouldn't do the scrape test but it's your drum! It's great to have you in the BDP club by the way!!
Ludwig BDP preserial KB kit Last viewed: 13 hours ago
Thanks for the info, and , I will take it somewhere with a sensitive scale and weigh it with the heads off. It feels really heavy, probably in the 9 pound plus range. I appreciate all your help and thanks for the welcome. I am really anxious to get started on the restoration and plan to take my time and try to do it right. I plan to use Mass metal polish on all the metal after I clean and get rid of all rust on the internal metal parts. I loved the picks of your BDP kit by the way...it inspires me to get mine to look as good as I can.

the ludalloy and brass versions weigh the same, that won't help you, your very welcome glad to be of help, thanks about my kit, I was very lucky this was For Sale only a few miles from my house and he was the original owner of this kit, yeah you want to take all the metal parts off clean them lube and reinstall them, for rust removal I use Groove Juice it will plow through almost anything! be very careful with the bass drum rim strips they get dry and brittle so work carefully around them, you've got a kit that will last the rest of your life then on to your kids!
Not just a home run, but a GRAND SLAM! As previously stated, the hardware alone is worth at least as much as you paid for these.
Pre-serial number with round muffler - I'm betting that's a COB snare drum.
Definitely one of the better scores posted as of late. Good for you!
Great find! Great color!
Novus polish 1 and 2 are your friends!flowers2
Is the BD maple inside? Seems like a lot were at this time...........
If you haven't done so already, click "Restoration and Help" in the VDF header, then "Is my drum COB". Looking inside a lug mounting hole is probably the safest way. I'm bettin' it's brass.
Hello to all and thanks for the kind words. I will take off the lugs and look and see if it is brass.... I do think it was a nice find and I sure was astounded to see it sitting in that antique mall and did a double flip when I saw the preserial KB.I did a double flip when they gave me that 10% discount as well! This forum has helped me to appreciate the find and for all the great advice. I will post as I find out if it is COB and I plan to post new pics when I finish the project....great stress reliever from the pressures of teaching school in these screwed up times! The Band
Nice Nice Find Indeed!
Congrats & Thanks For Sharing!
Hunch says the snare is COB (just a hunch though)
:D

Yes it is maple and stamped Sept. 27, 1961....I have just started taking off the heads on the top tom and have polished the rims with Never Dull magic wadding and the result was unreal.. it took off the crud and made it shine like crazy with some elbow grease, they look "new"!
Here is a pic of the preserial KB 15 x 4 snare after a complete dissasembly, cleaning, and polishing...Lots of elbow grease used!!!! Now on to other parts of the kit!
