Hello everyone! Mid-80s Ludwig Rocker question... Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

Hey all,

I've been lurking around the various vintage drum partner sites for some time, and having recently acquired a 1985-ish Ludwig Rocker II (not really "vintage" but it's the closest I've got), I figured I'd register!

I love the drums, they're in near mint condition. My only gripe is the rediculously flimsy tom mounts (the classic Ludwig 9.5mm jobs). They just don't cut it on anything bigger than the 12" drum. What I'd like to do is replace the original mounts with something beefier without drilling into the shells. Now I've done a bit of searching and discovered that the factory mounts have 1 7/8" hole spacing. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of more robust L-rod type mounts with the same spacing. Perhaps these: http://www.interstatemusic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10051&langId=-1&productId=116866 Thanks!

you can buy a ludwig mount for 9.5mm,and it comes with a memory lock that recesses into the mount, those are about 15 dollars.I am assuming that the problem you are having is the toms wanting to move up and down or laterally?I will try to find the link to the ludwig product.

9.5 is generally standard in the industry.dw is 12 mil and as far as i know

(as i never had a problem with 8 or 9 mil) that's the thickest l-rods there are.

those gibralter bkts are good enough for what you need.upgrade to the 12 mil ball l-rods and your golden.

another reason they may be slipping is the knurled section inside the mounts are worn or the eye bolt in the brackets are worn.sometimes all they need is a extra washer under the wingscrew were you tighten it down.i worked at a drum shop and the repaired alot of drums.sometimes the smallest, easiest thing like a washer made the biggest difference.

OR better yet,get some rims mounts, then you can put on any type of bracket you want.

Well the problem is the bigger toms especially do not stay clamped down very well. That's why I was looking for something more like the gibraltar clamp, which actually squeezes the outer half of the braket onto the inner as opposed to just using an eye bracket. I would go for rim mounts, but the 14 and 15" toms have 10 lugs per side, and I'm pretty sure no one makes rim mounts that would fit. That's why I'm trying to find a mount with the right hole spacing.

That's a good idea... I may buy one and try it out on one of the bigger drums to see if it does the job. I'm just worried that the problem lies not in the lack of memory lock, but in the eye bracket system itself just being not heavy duty enough. Thanks!

I had an early 80s Classic kit, 24 bass with 13x12 and 14x13 MOUNTED toms. They were HEAVY, 6ply shells, 16 lugs on the 13, and 20 lugs on the 14. Mahogany Cortex, a heavy wrap to boot. It was this same system and I had very little trouble with it. I am wondering if maybe, just maybe, you have some issues with the 9.5mm posts themselves.

Maybe it is time to replace the nuts that hold everything tight?

The new mounts have the same hole spacing and are the clamp style. You could replace the old ones without having to drill new holes...

Memory locks are a must also...

Oh I'm planning on replacing the stands for sure. Having to use a hex wrench is too much of a hassle, I'd rather have something more modern, with an l-rod and ball system

Are you reffering to the "elite" series brackets? The 10.5 mm ones?

Nope, the 'Keystone'. They are bit bulkier, but have the same hole spacing. They will also accept arms from 9.5 to 12 mm.

Someone mentioned RIMS. The new aluminum bands have adjustable mounting points. I have 2 sets with the "extra" lugs on them. Both have RIMS on them. They can be found, or you can have a machine shop make them. I had 2 made, then I sent them off to get chromed and you can't tell the difference.

You have lots of options, all depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to accomplish..

BTW, just looked at the Gibralter mount. The memory locks are flimsy and the mounts will strip out when used with smaller L-rods (9.5). I've repaired a couple for customers. IF you do go with the Gib's get the newer memory lock, it looks like a DW mem lock and is far sturdier. AS D-fish mentioned, you should upgrade your L-arms to the larger size when going with the Gibralter mounts. Also, these mounts will require drilling at least one new hole as the hole spacing is different from Ludwig....
