Absolutely not! In the absence of built-on bass drum spurs, they would have used clip-on bass drum spurs. Maybe I can find a picture of what I'm talking about. The anchor you've got would have been an amendment to the spurs and given some extra resistance to forward movement. The anchor was in no way meant to balance the drum.

makes sense.Cool1 Not sure I understand the thinking back then only having the anchor on front bass hoop (with no legs) and no balance once tom is mounted...Although maybe they wanted to preserve the sound of the drum by not adding more holes...Any thoughts?
the clamp on spurs work very well and that's what would also of been on the rims . so with both the spurs and anchor your bass drum is goning to pretty much stay put! I use them clamp on spurs on some of my kits. and I'm a heavy hard hitting player, they work just fine.

your pic is so small I couldn't make it out, but then I recognized it, these are the spurs your speaking of, yes they will work they are from a earlier time period, but they will do the job, and it's not at a bad price! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120628432239&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Sure, those will work for a 20" bass drum. The nice thing about the clip-ons is that you have some leeway as to where you mount them along the perimeter of the bass drum hoop.
