I felt extremely fortunate this week to find a vintage Slingerland kit
(22/12/13/16) in original Red Tiger wrap in excellent condition for what I considered a more than reasonable price. I've been looking for a kit in this particular wrap for what seems like forever and ended up finding the kit within 10 miles of my home.
Although the kit came with its share of dust and dirt which needed to be removed, it was extremely sound, both functionally and cosmetically. Other than one bass drum hoop in-lay, everything else on the kit was original. There were absolutely no modifications made nor any extra holes in any of the shells. Included with the drums themselves were the original Slingerland double Set-O-Matic tom mount, original Slingerland bass drum spurs and original Slingerland floor tom legs.
The prior owner also threw in a complete set of "red mutes", a hi-hat stand w/14" cymbals, a 20" ride cymbal and a Ludwig 406 Supraphonic snare. When researching the badge on the Supraphonic in the "Vintage Drum Identification" section of the forum, I noticed that it stated that this particular badge was used on Supraphonics with brass shells. This kind of surprised me since there's a label on the interior of the shell with a date of December 9, 1971. I didn't realize that Ludwig produced brass Supraphonics in the early 70s. The weight of this particular drum is comparable to my keystone COB Supraphonic and a magnet doesn't stick to the shell, but I'm still not sure whether it's a COB drum or not. I've attached a few pics of the drum and any "word of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated.Bowing
COB or not, I'm thrilled with the week I had. The first pic I attached shows the Red Tiger toms from the kit. I didn't take a pic of the bass drum as of yet since I'm in the process of cleaning it up a bit.
