Rail Consolette Or Ludwig "clipper" Mount? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I've been fortunate enough to hang onto my very first drum set -- a 1963 Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl Clubdate Kit, which my dad purchased new for me when I was 11 (no "old age" comments, please!).

The kit came from the factory with a Ludwig "Clipper" (#45N) clamp-on mount in lieu of a rail consolette.

This particular mount obviously served me well "back in the day" since I played on a steady basis and never found the need to replace it through the years. However, I'm considering bringing this kit out of storage to play in the near future and for some reason I'm a little leery as to how much "life" is left in the "Clipper".

I've seen countless Clubdate kits with rail consolettes and was considering having one mounted on my bass drum shell. Do any of you believe this would have a negative impact on the value of the kit due to originality issues? My guess is that some Clubdate kits came with rail consolettes factory-installed while others came with the "Clippers." Am I correct in this assumption?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

oldschool, I'm oldschool, it's not factory, don't do it, just get another clipper mount, or mount it on a snare stand!!

I don't know that much about vintage drums, but given the history and the drumset, I would agree with VM2k. Don't do it!

The "clipper" mounts work very well and do hold up. I wouldn't change a thing!

From the catalog pictures on this site:http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets_1963.html

it looks like the clipper was in the '62 catalog and the rail was in the '64.

I wouldn't mess with the originality either. I have a Slingerland set with the same type of tom mount as the clipper. The original owner used it that way for years...I prefer a rims mount hung from the cymbal stand.

I use a straight, single braced fairly lightweight cymbal stand...the positioning is limitless and it holds up just fine. If I sell the set, it will still be original...
