Worth Saving? Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

First post, I love this site. The information found here really helped me identify the first set of 1980's Ludwigs that I bought.

I recently found this 1960's set in my local area, and I was wondering if it was worth saving.

The badges are missing with the exception of the snare which has serial number 834266. This would place the set in the 1964 era. It looks like the lower hardware is missing from the floor toms and the guy said the inside of the shells were painted. Also, the bass drum tom mount looks odd or newer than that era but I could be wrong.

I am a do it yourself kinda of guy so this set looks like a fun project. The guy wants $475 for the kit. Is this a good deal or should I steer clear from these.

On a side note, is it wrong to paint the shells in a high quality base and clear coat versus rewrapping them? I am just curious if painting is an option or if the shells can be stained when the wrap is removed or does the glue leave a permanent residue.

Thanks all

Chris

I think they are worth it, offer him 400.00 and see if he bites! What are the shells, wrapped or painted, hard to tell from the pics.

They look like butcher block. And one is a tom holder, the other a rail mount, so the parts alone could make it make it worth grabbing.

Taking the wrap off and staining, in the realm of possible, yes, in terms of value, it will kill any value they hold. As a players kit, those are the bomb.

Right as rain, if you're gonna keep 'em forever, paint. If you ever want to sell 'em, don't. Frankly it made me cringe and wince to type that last line about the painting...

How much would I be looking to put a wrap on them? Sorry, but I am a total n00b. I recently bought a 10 piece double bass Rocker kit from 1988 and love it but they are a poplar/birch shell. The Rockers are nice but I would love to have a vintage set that is maple so these caught my eye.

It literally looks like 60s-70s cortex wrap. Countertop material.

As for the prospect of maple, these might, after tearing the wrap off, clean up nicely and make a clear coat reasonable. I only paint the mahogany shells I rescue. If I were doing a Ludwig kit....if the wrap is salvagable and you ever want to profit on them, leaving the wrap on is the way to go. If they are to be your final players, then a clear coat of lacquer would be the way, if that is what YOU want. Re-wrapping is expensive, and rarely results in a return.

I am not looking for resale. I am turning 40 this year and part of my mid-life crisis was getting back into drumming. I laid down the sticks in 1985 when girls and cars became more important, so I sold 11pc Pearl kit to fund my Camaro. I recently bought the Rocker kit without knowing what they were. I was a little bummed to find out the Rocker line was an entry level kit of the 80's. Luckily, they are the Rockers and not the Rocker II's. How will these sound in comparison to the Rocker line of the 80's?

Looking at the Ludwig information, it looks like 61 to 65 had white painted interiors.

These will sound like Ludwigs. The Rocker sound like...well, Rockers, depending on which shells they are. If they are the 6 ply, they will sound like late 70s early 80s, if they are 4 ply, they will sound like later Luds. The cortex 3 ply shells with re-rings will sound like the Ludwigs of your youth.

I just left from looking at them. The wraps is some aftermarket junk that is all lumpy. It looks like it was put on by a 12 year old. The lower rings and lugs are missing from both floor toms. The toms do have the reinforcement ring. I am going to check to see how much the missing hardware is going to run and an approximate cost on wraps.
