Questions Regarding Ludwig B/o Badged Kit Last viewed: 10 hours ago

I've got a few questions regarding an early 70s Ludwig kit that I'm hoping some of you "Luddy Gurus" can help me with:

1. All the drums in this kit (22/13/16), with a Supraphonic snare, have the "pointy" Ludwig B/O badges. The badge installed on the rack tom doesn't have a serial number, unlike those installed on the floor tom, snare drum and bass drum. Was this a common practice?

2. The interior shell of the bass drum is natural (unpainted) wood with reinforcement rings, while the interior shells of the toms have a granitone paint. Does this seem "period correct", including the mix and match aspect?

3. How does the sound of the granitone painted shells compare to Ludwig's natural (unpainted) shells or white resocoat painted shells?

I'll try and answer these in order for you...:D

1) It was not a usual thing for badges to go onto drums without serial numbers, but it did happen occasionally.

2) It is possible to have a factory matching kit with both granitone and natural maple interiors. Ludwig usually grabbed a finished shell off the rack to match the others going down the line. The maple interior drum could have been a leftover just waiting for an order to be filled by the time the other were being made wth the granitone interior.

3) I personally hear no discernable difference between the three interior coatings. If anyone can seriously claim they can hear a difference, then they have superman's hearing!

It's my understanding that Ludwig produced its blue & olive "pointy badge" without a serial number on it between 1971 and 1972.

On all 3 points, I concur. I owned a red/silver/blue sparkle Ludwig kit that had a clear maple interior bass drum and granitone interior toms. And there is absolutely no difference in tone as far as I'm concerned...I love me some granitone especially since they are not as desirable as clear and can be picked up at a "discount" as a result (I'm a cheapskate!!)!

Did Ludwig offer a black cortex (?) on its B/O "pointy" badged kits during this period? I haven't been able to find one in the catalogs I've seen.

The "dude" beat me to it...I have two toms from the early 70's that are black cortex, 3-ply, pointy badges etc...
