Hey guys, check out the new Bellson Vid on Billy Gladstone's MySpace page
Billy Gladstone
Chet Isn't this also on your website?? also is that BG on the Vibes on Ida/ some of these days?? Oh, man the solo on skin Deep is awesome, that snare drum is too much and the gretsch kit that's it right there!!! thanks, mark Clapping Happy2
Great video! Great drum.. I have not seen that video before. Louie was a friend of ours and we supported him however we could.
Not that I want to change the topic, but staying within the Billy Gladstone topic, I have a re-issue snare drum that was part of the 97 drums in gold. This is #11 from Liam Mulholland.
There is very little information about him on the net, and the drum never had the plate put on it from Arnie.
I wanted to complete the drum with a commemorative plate for Liam and Arnie did say he would make the plate for me a year or so ago.
What can you tell me about the drum and also about Liam. I like to pay tribute to him in some way.
I have always been interested in the vent hole and the correct placement of the metal plate/badge.
Thanks
David

Hi Mark
The "1957 Skin Deep" vid is on my site (as it is one of my favorites) but not the new one I posted on Billy's site of Bellson playing and talking about his Gladstone drum. Glad I was there to record it (even though the quality is poor, at least it settled down when he started playing). He was 75 when I shot this vid. I may be older than most of you and I can tell you, the sad truth is, age has its effects. Bellson still had impressive chops (and was suffering with Parkinson's). The only one who did not seem to suffer the test of time was Buddy Rich. I saw him play live the year before he died (at age 69) and I was slack jawed...just as impressive as when I first saw him in 1960.
Yeah that's Billy on the xylophone playing Ida/One Of These Days...and that's running at normal speed!

Hi David
Complimenti! (easy to translate). You have a piece of history there. There is not enough space here to tell all the stories of Liam Mulholland. Suffice it to say I was usually double overed with laughter when I was around him. We shared a room at (I believe) the 8th Chicago Show (when it was downtown Chicago). He not only had the best dope but THE funniest stories. And his gear was always the best…got a lot of great stuff from him. The drum is well worth preserving. Stay after Lang about the nameplate…it should be preserved (and so should Liam, God rest his troubled soul!)
Best
Chet
Chet, Louie was still awesome even at this stage, and his stories were top notch, man thank you very much for sharing this with us, also I saw buddy right after his quadruple by pass heart surgery it was an outside event temperature in the low 90's and he was smoking hot on the kit!! And your right sure do miss Liam!! you'll need to expand on some of your tales and exploits with him sometime! he he!! man so that was BG on the vibes he was smoking those vibes!! WOW! pal thanks again, mark
What would be the best way for this plate?
I was thinking.
"Liam Mulholland"
19?? - ????
or
In Memory
Liam Mulholland
#11
Just trying to get some ideas on the best way to present the drum for the future.
Thanks
David
I would think just "Liam Mulholland 19xx-xxxx" as it was his drum, not a drum made to memorialize him, correct?

Now that I look at this drum I wonder why the extra hole on the shell. If there was no name plate then the 3-way tuning key was in that position.
I had thought the name plate should go on that panel which would cover the hole in the shell.
So maybe just his name and 1997 #11.
Liam Mulholland
1997 #11
