I have a '69 Ludwig Standard drum set. I like everything about it, and it sounds great, I use it for Jazz gigs. The sizes are 20,14 and 12, the color Ruby strata. My problem is that when I set up and take down it takes extra time because I need a socket wrench to lock down the mounted tom, it has a larger size bolt where newer hardware would have a wing nut. Does a large size drum key exist for the tom mount?

O Lugs is on the mark, I've got one of those wrenches that came with my Standard kit. I've seen some that were stamped 'Ludwig' in script. Mine is blank.

I had a ludwig(I think) 4 in 1 tool that had a flat screwdriver,drum key,wingnut tightener,and the hex bolt wrench.Got lost with my stick bag.I really found it handy,no matter what kit I used it with.

Hi,

I have the same kit and it is my favourite! The best solution is to swap out the mount for a modern day Ludwig single tom mount and change the Standard tom mount which is likely worn. It fits in the Standard holes and has a memory lock. I still have the original single mount Standard should I wish to part with the kit but if you're playing the kit out it's a time saver not to mention sturdier too. The cost is only about 50-60 bucks so to me it was worth it and no hole drilling!!

That's good advice.

Another option, to keep the mounting tube from slipping down, into the bass drum, is to get a properly-sized hose clamp at the local hardware or auto parts store and affix it to the mounting tube. It won't prevent the tube from turning, but it will prevent it from slipping down.

I have yet to try those new memory lock mounts, but that would be the most practical solution if you're a gigging drummer who is going to be tearing down and setting up a lot.

I use the hose clamp idea for my single tom Slingy stuff. It's a great idea that I stole ... umm ... borrowed here. Excellent advice.
