1970 LM400 Supraphonic Bearing Edge Question Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I recently came across a nice looking 1970 LM400. It has a stamped date of FEB 16, 1970 inside the shell. I'm aware that many of these drums suffer from "acne" due to the chrome plating not wanting to adhere to the aluminum but this one looks rather nice on the outside. There is a ring around the inside where the plating is flaking off but I've read that any loos of plating does not affect the sound quality of the drum. My bigger concern is the topside bearing edge. Upon close examination there appear to be dings in the bearing edge. They are easier to feel with a finger than to spot with the naked eye. The pics make the imperfections look larger/deeper than they actually are.

My question is, could these dings affect the sound or playability of the drum? I'd imagine they affect the resale of the drum quite a bit. How would this have happened? Misplaced stick strikes? I don't feel any abrasions with the head off so I'd imagine that the "damage" happened with the head on. Or, could this be a factory defect? There is one slight dent in the batter rim near a few of the bearing edge irregularities. It's a shame since it's such a nice looking drum otherwise.

Any thoughts, advice, or ideas on worth of the drum are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Shell was probably dropped with hoop(s) off. No way from sticks - unless King Kong was playing it; so probably not affecting sound all that much, if at all.

I don't think value's dinged too much as they look minor.

Thanks for the info. I know, in all my years of playing drums I've never seen a dented metal bearing edge. I was like, how hard and haphazardly were they swinging to do this?
