two great finds in the same weekend! Last viewed: 9 hours ago

So I had some time on Saturday and drove over to where Sam Ash and Guitar Center are here in town, to get a pair of cowbell stands to use as hoop clamp bass drum spurs (see last picture of one of my former kits if you aren't familiar with the concept).

That's not what ended up happening!

There at Guitar Center, was a Keystone Acrolite, with a 65ish Serial Number (The date stamp is in pristine shape, but unfortunately intersects the shell bead so the last digit is missing).

It was tagged as "1960s Steel Acrolite Snare Drum" for $129.

Well, I was about 99.9% certain that this drum looked aluminum, and that a steel beaded keystone badge drum with bowtie lugs simply had never been a thing, and of course, I could always return it if it failed the magnet test.

Of course - it didn't fail! I have previously owned and gigged a blacro for years, and got a late 70s BO badge last year, that I liked (which I sold two days after buying this one!)

At the Sam Ash next door, was a GORGEOUS Blue/Silver Duco Slingerland Student. I've also always wanted a vintage drum with single flanged hoops (I already have another similar age sling.student with COB stick savers, and an alternate set of field drum wood hoops).

This one I held off on until the 70s Acro sold . . . but it was still there when I had to go to the same shopping center for work! This one was a good deal, but not great I think.

So now in addition to selling the BO acro, I'm offloading two premier snares, and since I hadn't posted in a while, I figured I'd show off these two wonderful finds before just throwing something up in the ad section!

because of the limits of 5 attachments, I couldn't put the promised explanatory picture of cowbell clamps as spurs on the first post.

Great finds! Not a huge duco fan, but the blue duco on that Slingerland looks really nice.

My eyes are playing tricks on me in the photo above of that gold sparkle kit. Is that two floor toms I'm looking at? Or one, that just looks really wide?

Vintage kits:
1969 Rogers Holiday - black diamond pearl (20/16/13/12)
196x Star (Lyra/Majestic) - blue sparkle pearl (22/14/13) Restoration Project
1987 Pearl KC-3500 - jet black (22/16/13/12)
Not-so-vintage kits:
2007 Hart Dynamics Professional 6.4 e-kit / Roland TDW-20
Snares:
60s Gretsch 5x14 maple WMP / 68 Ludwig 5x14 Supraphonic / 93 Pearl 3x14 Free Floating brass piccolo / 60s Star (Lyra) 5x14 luan blue sparkle pearl / 87 Pearl 6.5x14 steel

one that IS really wide. It's a 12x15 Ludwig Marching Snare that I repurposed.

That kid was a complete Frankenkit

14x20 Gold Sparkle Slingerland Bass Drum (circa 65)

8x12 Gold Sparkle Maxitone (MIJ) tom (the maxitone clip mount perfectly fit the Slingerland Spade)

and the converted marching snare (which has since been restored to snare-ness and is in the hands of a local orchestral percussionist)

Nice! I'd convinced myself that it was two floor toms, but the fact that I could only see 3 legs was confusing the bejeezus out of me.

I agree with Vater , there is something about that duco snare with the blue sparkle.

Yeah, the Blue Duco with the Ludwig Sparkle ends up being better looking than it would if everything was duco or everything was blue sparkle (not to mention that if it was Slingerland instead of Ludwig Blue Sparkle it would be a whole different ballgame).

Other cool notes:

1. I came within 1 day of purchasing this drum on an exact anniversary of it's date stamp (I got it on the 6th).

2. 3 of the 4 drums in my BDP Slingerland kit (12/16/20, the 13 is a later add on) are May 65 date stamp as well (which this Acro almost certainly is). Of course I play it as a 13/16/20 but still.

Good eye! The bass is a pre-serial 12x22, with a 62 date stamp. The 8x12 is also pre-serial, and 62 appropriate though I can't see a date stamp. I presume that they were sold together as a "New Yorker" outfit. The Floor tom has a serial that my browsing says is most likely 64. The drums are all in similar condition, so I think they were probably matched up pretty early in the floor tom's life (maybe it was even ordered for that purpose-though that is entirely surmise on my part.) The legs I think I added myself? Can't remember now. I certainly put those feet on.

I wish my Duco was in that great shape as yours. Good find.
