Slingerland Date Stamps

Loading...

I am accustomed to seeing 1960s Slingerland date stamps in the "MON YR" format (March 1966 would be MAR 66). They typically appear as large and thick characters and are stamped in black ink. See the first two pictures for examples of OCT 65 and NOV 66 date stamps.

There is a drum currently on eBay that has a different style of date stamp that one normally associates with Ludwig. It is the "MON ## 19##" format (March 12, 1963 would be MAR 12 1963). The characters are much smaller and not as thick. The third picture is from that listing. It has a NOV 1 1965 date.

I am not very well versed in Slingerland, but I have been casually recording serial numbers and dates stamps on Slingerland drums for about three years and had not seen this during the era. Has anyone else seen Slingerland date stamps in this "month date year" format during the 1960s?

Yes, the month, day, year format does show up occasionally. It seems a bit more common in the early sixties but I have noticed it in the mid sixties as well. The stamp in your second picture has provision for the day but the "blank" spaces were chosen. Is the drum in the last picture a "Shelbyville"? The re-rings look to be oak. There is currently a mid-sixties Shelbyville on eBay that has the month, day, year date stamp.

There is no badge on this tom, so I do not know where it was made.

I just took a look at Shelbyville offerings on eBay. So was a different format date stamp used on the Shelbyville manufactured drums?

Also interesting instead of a P stamp the P is done by hand.

Most Slingerland toms, up through 1966, did not have air vents and badges. All drums assembled in Shelbyville, including toms, did have badges and air vents. Also, all Shelbyville shells used solid oak re-rings, instead of maple. Very easy to tell oak from maple.

As to that date stamp, I've never seen a Slingerland drum that included the month AND day, like Ludwig. Not that it couldn't be done, but I'm not aware that Slingerland ever used that format.

Just looked at those pictures again, and the drum in question does appear to have oak re-rings. So, it may be possible that Shelbyville was stamping their shells like Ludwig AND not installing air vents and badges during this time period!

KC, can you provide the auction number for this drum?

Hey idrum4fun, check this out. There is another Shelbyville tom on eBay (item #201905460570) that has no badge or air vent and DOES have the month, day, year date stamp. It also has the P handwritten rather than stamped. Also the WMP Shelbyville snare we have discussed in the past has a month, day, year date stamp.

slingerfan!

Thanks for the item number on the other Shelbyville tom! Here's the link for all to see it...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slingerland-Vintage-Stage-Band-14-Floor-Tom-Drum-Shell-White-Marine-Shelbyville-/201905460570?hash=item2f0280d55a:g:89sAAOSwB-1Y4v0N

So, it would appear that the assemblers in Shelbyville were using a stamp very similar to what Ludwig was using at the time...and NOT using air vents and badges until the same time as the Niles factory!

KC... thanks for the link! As for the key holder, I don't think it's a factory item. The only key holder I'm aware of is the style that was installed on marching drums, using only 2 screws aligned vertically.
