Nice Kit... And yes to what has been said... Note: The "Patented" version of the Set O Matic first appeared mid 1971..Cheers John

What do you mean by that John? Just curious if that helps me set a more specific date range. I'm going through some catalogs now at http://www.drumarchive.com/Slingerland/. Cool resource which I 'm sure everyone here already knows. :)

late-60s/early-70s aren't too far off. :)

It is your sale, of course, but I'd lean toward not mentioning the 60's in the ad. There may not have been records of serial numbers as we know, but according to the link below, the black/silver badge did not even show up until mid-1970, and even then, it was the aluminum transition "fat S" badge. The two badges I can see from your photos are the "skinny S" badge (ok, I know that sounds funny to say!) which came after the transition, which most likely dates them to late 1970 at earliest, I would think. Nice looking set, and best of luck with the sale!

Yes, I wasn't sure if they were late 60s or 70s. I'm honest and would certainly advertise them as very early 70s. Thanks for the info!

I mean that the mount on the BD appears to be badged... "Patented"..

Prior to that they were badged "Pat Pend".... and late 60's they were an un badged alloy version..

The patent was issued april '71..

Cheers

John

Just quoting the info from this site, but it's the only place I have found with the info:

Black and Brass Niles badge: "Slingerland used from October 1962 all the way into early 1970."

Black and Aluminum Transition: "Brief appearance primarily in the middle of 1970"

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_1_badges.html

Again, just using the only resource I know of, but thanks for the correction!

Lots of factors and small details such as longjohn mentioned to accurately date your drums. Badges and serials alone are only a start. The small details are used to validate or invalidate what the badges and serials are telling us. Your hardware is validating an early 70's build. On quick look nothing is "jumping out" as incorrect for that era. If you are interested in further validation you could check the drum interiors. Expect to find clear maple or a light chocolate milk stain. Hoops should be COS. What type of fasteners are used to attach the lugs etc? Looks like a fairly unmolested kit. Good luck.

So if you look at the Niles Gold badge (second from right on Bottom Row),,, it was used '62-'70... after that there were 3 Black Silver variations through to the end of 70's... (exception being the Shelbyville badge)..

Cheers

Black/brass badge used into early '70 according to DrCJW. First use of black/silver badge was 1970.
