Wait a second... if I was in the market for a set of drums and Bun E offered me a couple of his kits to look at, the search would end right there for me.
Ask Bun to show you what he's offering. The man is a well-respected collector it's gotta be worth a look see before looking anywhere else.
Bun E sorry for pulling your cover, but this guy should know who he is dealing with. You're as safe as they come in terms of any transaction and who wouldn't want to own something you owned and possibly played. Just too good an offer to pass up is all I'm saying.
John
I didn't see where Bun was actually offering up any of his own drums in his post, though maybe he does have some for sale. The set linked above looks to be a pretty sweet one day deal.
I have a couple Ludwig sets for sale from late 60's in your price range. I'm sure a few other folks here do too.
He actually said he had a couple for sale from the late 60's. I was waiting to hear back from Bun to see what he said.

The kits I have for sale are a 1966-7 set and an early 70's mod orange orphan set.
The mod orange set is way over your budget, the earlier kit is at the top end of your budget.
The white marine pearl kit referred to earlier in this thread and in the for sale section by "verminator" is a great deal and probably just what you're looking for imo. You ought jump on it I'd think....
