Remove chrome from Ludwig Supraphonic 63

Loading...

I bought a Supraphonic for $80 that had a bad case of Supracne.

Found a plating company that would strip the chrome off for $25 (it was below their minimum piece fee of $100, but he took pity and tossed it in the bath with another client's work).

Tried to do a simple brushed finish with what came back, but I brushed and brushed and could never get below the pits, so it still kind of looked like hell.

Checked with a local powder coater, who gave me a laughable quote. In the hundreds, IIRC.

I wound up giving it to a friend to bead blast, as he had access to a blasting cabinet at work. Came out pretty nice, if a bit rough. I took some Scotch Brite to it to knock off the roughness and it looks fine as a bare aluminum shell.

Been thinking lately about maybe trying a Plasti-Dip spray coating on it:

If I don't like it, it can just peel right off.

I would be careful using the plastic coating because it could kill the resonance in the shell...

Nielda - DO NOT SANDBLAST THE SHELL!The right way to do it is to have the shell stripped by a plating company and then tell them you want the aluminum polished to a high gloss. I did the same thing years ago and the drum came out spectacular. The good thing about polishing the aluminum is, it's just as shiny as chrome and it will never pit again. BTW, I got $300 for mine when I sold it some years back.Go for it, just let professionals handle the stripping and polishing.John

I agree with John here, his drum is really nice.

Thank you!

If it does so, I can peel it right off.

I media blasted mine (think it was sand)... no big deal. Got all the pits out. I left it rough, almost like a hand hammered dryness to it...
