Also, just as a backup...I know you'd probably rather have a vintage hoop...but....drummaker.com, aitwood.com, or precisiondrum.com can sell you a new raw maple hoop with an inlay rabbet for a reasonable sum.

Then you can just paint it, buy some sparkle inlay, and slap it on there yourself.

I'm looking at the same thing for a 26" hoop. I checked out aitwood and they sell them in maple or birch. What would be the benefits of either wood or which would be better for a bass drum?

I'm not an expert on this subject but I would try to match the hoop wood with the same wood as your bass drum. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice Jaye. I have been thinking about reinstalling the front bass drum head ever since I replaced all my drum heads with Evans heads. In fact that's when I realized that I couldn't find the front hoop and had no idea as to what I did with it. Although a thought ocured to me just today. I think I will replace both hoops with brass ones since I have powder coated all the other drum hoops gold. I have black drums and it is quite striking. Since I "defaced" the drums already it seems pointless to only replace the bass drum hoops with original equipment. So I'm off in my new search, by the way the suggestions in your reply should help much. Thanks.

I would think that the main reason they sell different types is so you can match the wood if you're doing a natural finish or stain - so it would cosmetically match as best as possible.

If you're painting it, I can't see how there'd be a difference as both are dense good sounding woods.

Well, I can see where it may make some astronomically small sonic difference, because the woods will resonate at different frequencies....if we want to split hairs...I mean you know...ah heck, go for the least expensive choice. You probably won't notice the diff anyway.

You guys are thinking what I was thinking. I can see where the wood would make a difference with the shells, but the bass hoops...might not be that noticable. But since the price is about the same, I might just go for maple since the interiors are maple with maple re-rings.
