Eddie Ryan Snare w/ Rogers Hardware

Loading...

Hi all, I was down at a drum shop yesterday doing some Christmas shopping for myself and, after talking to a guy who worked there about Rogers drums, he brings out this snare that's been in the shop for a while now. It's chrome over what appears to be mahogany with Rogers beavertail lugs, the clockface throwoff and butt plate, and tall boy hoops. There's only a little sticker on the shell inside that says it's made by Eddie Ryan Drum Co. A quick google search shows that this was a drum company that came about in the early 70's and made custom drums.

Is there any way to date the drum? I'd be interested in knowing when it was made and what it's worth. It sounds killer; it doesn't sound like a metal Powertone or a wood Powertone, it's like a bridge between the two. If I could pick it up for a good price I'd love to make it mine, any info would be appreciated!

I emailed Eddie himself for any information and I have yet to receive a reply from him.

I met Eddie Ryan at his workshop many years ago and played one of his kits, a yellow double bass set up previously owned and played by Pete Gill of U.K. rock band Saxon. Nice kit with big round lug boxes if I remember correctly.

1920s 14"x5" Ludwig Super Sensitive Dual Snare

1938 8"x15" Leedy Broadway Standard

...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

Yessir! That sure sounds like Eddie's kits.

As if on cue, after that post last night he emailed me back. This is what he told me:

This is an English Rogers drum looking at the Covent garden label I would have refinished it in the 1980's, it was made by Boosey and Hawkes in the mid 60's it's worth about £150/£175.

So I guess that answer's the questions I had about the drum!

Hi John!

Based on my other objectives with my other drum projects I still have to overcome, I think I might pass on the snare.

The shop had been using it as a practice drum for the lessons they give in the store; it wasn't out front and doesn't have a price yet, so I'm unaware what price they would sell it at. Always worth a shot, though! It's all yours, buddy :)
