Vintage yamaha tour series Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Just got these beauties for a very good price. I was dealing with a 17 yr old the whole time ! Lol ! Good kid and very polite..Went and pick them up with my brother yesterday as he was my transport..So spent the afternoon with my bro who i don't see often, and made a great purchase.. Although there are some issues with the bass drum, (one hoop damaged beyond repair, and both spurs having missing parts and one that wobbles) everything else was in almost perfect condition and working order.. Now here's the very strange but unique thing with these drums.. Both toms have 2 badges ! Yes, two ! I personally have never seen this.. What was the reason for that ? The badge with grommet says made in Japan and has the serial number (which begins with 8) but the other badge has no serial number..Was wondering if you Yamaha experts can hone in on this anomaly, and tell me what year these were made and how many plies on these shells ? From what i've researched from vintagedrumguide.com, they look like the Tour series, birch wood, and are from early 80's ? Here is one pic before i give them a totally clean up. As usual, Any and all other thoughts are appreciated.. My apologies about the pic being sideways. ;) The link shows what looks to be my kit..

Nice catch!

Yamaha has been doing two badges for a long time. My oldest blue tom dates to 1980 (I bought the kit new in 93 I think it was) and it has two badges.

The reason is, if you run a 12-13 up the vent holes are out. But if you run a 10-12 up, they are not. Slap some extra badges on for free advertising!

I always appreciated this detail as my blue kit has gone through a few changes in set up over the years.

Here's a fun pic of some blue and some black drums playing together. I got a lot of compliments and of course they sounded killer... (Blue Snare is the Montineri, black one is the 6-1/2X13 oak)

Very cool Jim ! I always enjoy seeing a mixed finish, a.k.a "jellybean" kit..And thanks for the info..I had no idea that Yamaha made double badged drums.. Pretty cool.. I cleaned up and tuned the 12" and it is loud ! I also tuned the floor and my spare room floor actually shook !. Lol ! I can't wait to hear the kick.. It will also be cool having the option to switch from a 12 to a 13 whenever i feel like it ;)

cheers,

Rob

These can be loud, yes. Any head works on the RC's anyway, so you get a feel of what the head sounds like.

No flash, just good honest drums that are very well made.

Indeed, extremely well made. I noticed this while doing the clean-up and detailing of these drums. Rock solid hardware and well constructed shells.. ;)

You can see the relief wash over the engineer when you uncase them in the studio.
