My "Blackrolite" dating - help Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

Hello,

can anybody help with dating my Ludwig Acrolite 14x6,5 with black&white badge and black galaxy finish, please?

I`ve read they have been produced since 1984 with this coating and I`d like to know from which decade comes my snare :)

Serial no is: 6305974

I think yours is newer. I don't see a muffler and it looks like the snare butt is a die cast model from what I can tell. Great drum!

Thanks :)

Yup - the muffler is missing here (I mean - none, there`s no mount for it). I also have 70's Supraphonic 14x5 which comes with the muffler and I miss it in this Acrolite ;) (moongel goes back on my snare batter again ;))

Both rims are die-casts. But I dunno if they are original or rather "custom" parts. I am sure that this Acrolite piece in newer than 80's but I wonder if it`s 90's or 2k`s or after 2010 ? I bought it used but in mint condition nd that means one of three:

-it`s very new

-it`s older but previous owner took much care of it

-it spent many time in it`s case unused

I can`t reach seller anymore, besides I assumed that knowing serial number I can quickly know the snare birthdate...and that`s no that obvious I`m affraid.

Just checked mine. It is serial number 6302335. Not sure on the date of mine either. Mine has triple flanged hoops. Mine is also new enough to not have the muffler but not so new that it has lug gaskets.

Nice one Mike.

I thought black and white Ludwig badge is automatically 1980s, not earlier or later?

Never had any luck finding a solid build date on the one gave to the nephew. Didn't have the O-rings. Lost a bunch of pics. Will have some sent. Nice snares!

Nothing special here but I like them.

Hey Larry!

Thanks. They actually used the B/W badges up until a few years ago. Most recently they were used on Ludwig's with import shells. They had a wood snare, steel snare, brass snare and a bronze snare. But the Black Galaxy acrolites have been using this badge since mid 80's or so I think. It's a little confusing as the Blacros have always used the USA made shell same as the Supra.

Judging by the style of the batter hoop, the style of the cast butt, and the o-rings on the tension rods, I'd have to say early 2000's.

I had a green sparkle Monroe Keystone badge 6x13 6-ply maple new in 2004 that had the same features. Mine had a p-86 strainer and both hoops were cast. I know these to be original as I ordered the drum that way in late 2003. Took a few months to get at the time. So, I'd say again that your "blackrolite" is probably from around that same time period.

Did you check the interior of the shell for the date ? My '71 original Acrolite has an ink stamp dated April 17, 1971..

Clear as crystal too !
